It is possible to start getting swarmed during a maelstorm. Preferably by Mi-Go Experiments who always from a schematic fragment.
Very possible. Depends on your settings for the maelstrom.
But you can’t get them to spawn by themselves.
That mess you see there in the photo, I managed to get about 8 recipes from all the fragments from them, including the armor and katana recipes from previous encounters.
All of them just as brutal.

The spawn in there becomes madness, before the end, it’s freaking awesome!!

Please accept my apologies.
But definitely yeah, it starts off mildly and builds up intensity till near the end and that’s when it can become overwhelming. I particularly have a dislike for those Yakith ambushers.
But it’s from those Mi-Go where I’ve picked up most recipes.
I can relate Bro, I have been there right in the heart of it at times.
My partner and I have set up a fortress near the tower and it’s big enough to get the siege elders attention. Madness!
That was also around the time official servers were glitched, and Maelstrom creatures would spawn anytime you entered the Maelstrom area. Even better for power leveling thralls and farming schematic fragments. Plus fiughting them in broad daylight.
I remember that now.
For a while they were everywhere even when the maelstrom wasn’t active. They were attacking everything in sight until they saw us, seemingly giving them something more fun to focus on.
During the night it was worse because when the maelstrom became active the environment turned pitch black and we couldn’t see anything unless we were lucky to see the red, glowing eyes of Yakith coming at us. If you couldn’t put a torch down to see what was coming at you, you were stuck carrying one without the benefit of using a shield.
Stand, try to fight, get knocked down numerous times, get swarmed. Run for your life hoping to get to some safety on higher ground for a little while for a chance to heal.
Losing your stamina during those murderous encounters was a death sentence.
