All is right and the game restarts

I am playing at a modded server. Every so often this happens:

  • I leave a server, and 30 minutes later I try to get in again.
  • and the game gets into a restart loop.

Meanwhile:

  • no differences with the modlist I downloaded
  • no version differences
  • file integrity checked: no issue

All appears well and the game game does – click — restart.

How do I troubleshoot this?
Where can I check why the game keeps restarting?

It may not look like there is a version mismatch, but likely there is. It’s the hazard of long mod lists. Either you got an update or the server did, either way, until the mismatch is resolved, it won’t connect. To force my machine to update (because Steam is a bit wonky at times), I always just restart my PC when having issues. Sometimes simply closing down and restarting Steam will do it, but PC restart always works.

Restarting Steam appears to do the trick.
Without restarting Steam I can get to the server list and join unmodded servers.
To join any modded server I have to restart Steam.
