I believe you are correct about rock. As far as I know only sand and maybe snow should behave with you sinking into it. The rest I would think was a glitch or a bug.

Some of the ground points could be explained away as naturally occuring as a sharp stone vissure causing a hard line break resulting in the straight lined peaks.
