I don’t want to question the value of genuine artistic work here, nor that there will always be a place for it. However, AI-generated images offer an easy, and more importantly, fast and adaptable way to create. If I don’t like something or want a change in an image, I simply tell the AI, and a few seconds later, the alteration is there. This development is still in its early stages. As a software developer, I’ve also noticed how much has changed in just the last year. I can use AI as a tool to program things in a minute that used to take me weeks or months. Of course, you always have to be careful and, above all, give the right commands, but how could I conscientiously ignore such time savings?
The idea that AI “steals” from real artists also needs to be reconsidered. In reality, it’s just getting inspiration, just like any other artist does, whether it’s for an image or music. Of course, there are some who are completely innovative, but an artist can also give that as a command to the AI.
I mean, look at this image here. I created it with Google. I said, “Create an image of Conan fighting a red dragon.” One sentence, and five seconds later, the image was done. And I can’t fault it; it’s pretty much what I imagined. Now I could also say, “during a sandstorm” or “the dragon should breathe fire,” and so on.
I believe artists need to engage with this and use these tools, but without forgetting how to draw themselves.
