C’mon, it’s not a fantasy game without unrealistic asymmetrical armor!
While I had this idea just for gloves, being able to display a set as just left handed or right handed, I don’t see why there couldn’t be mail with only one pauldron, breastplate that only covers half, or even armor where half of it appears damaged.
I dunno, just a shower thought.
And apologies if this has been posted before, a Google search for asymmetrical armor showed me nothing.
They have a few pieces you can consider. Like the Siptah Black Corsair Chest piece, Pictish Brave Tunic, Watches Tunic, even standard Heavy Armor is technically asymmetrical. I do believe there are a couple bracers that work for this too (if you want to make a mess of armor and then match the colors).
Any of the smaller, shorter gloves that show more of the arm… will show your characters bracer on the left hand. That might make it a little to your liking. Try gladiators bracers out. They vary a fair amount between the left and right. Dying might make the difference more visible.
Zamorian Dancer skirt for pants.
Throw on a peg leg for the feet slot.
Last thought would be to use a shield and an axe. Specifically, oddly shaped ones. There are a few that could be to your liking, such as the pirate ship wheel shield. Don’t know the name.
I’ll have to try some of these suggestions out! Though I am going for a mix of an Edward Kenway/Ezio Auditore look, specifically AC2 where Ezio has just the one bracer and his other hand is gloved.
Having fairly recently played Black Flag, I can wholeheartedly support that (Really love that story)
I guess the Barachan Reaver coat must be good for that?
If mods are an option for you, Immersive Armors actually now has some full on AC style wrist blades - not sure if they were just costume or if there was a way to fight with them - but I figure they might be of interest. Not sure if they have single gloves, but the mod definitely does offer single pauldrons.
There are cases of asymmetrical armors in real life, primarily jousting armors and gladiator armor. Both were used in very specific settings of course.
The main usage of asymmetrical armors on the battlefield however were likely just broken, scrounged or cobbled together pieces. They aren’t asymmetrical by design, but if you only have one gauntlet you’d probably wear it.
So it’s rare, or maybe ever very rare, but it’s not as if it’s completely ahistorical
Yeah, and piecemeal armors make sense in the Exiled Lands, since most people there would scavenge rather than have access to probfessional armorers (even though there seems to be quite an abundance of those among the Exiles, too).
But I guess the “unrealistic” was referring to fantasy armor that don’t make sense as armor - and we have plenty of examples of that in the game. Sure, there are real world examples of armor that’s more for show than for protection (including some gladiator armor), as well as all sorts of tribal protective gear made by people who had no access to proper metalworking techniques.
What I really miss in the game is mail armor. Sure, the Cimmerians have it, but most of Europe and significant parts of Asia and some of Africa used mail in some form for two thousand years. Heck, in Howard’s stories, Conan himself often wore mail armor.
And the Cimmerian stuff looks bulky. I’d like a lighter, more form-fitting version of mail.
