Background sorting causing lag?

Bug Description:

Background sorting causing lag?

Bug Reproduction:

I opened my compost heap and saw something strange. The plantfiber and bonemeal isn’t neatly stacked anymore. I put these in full stacks so this means that when the compost was made in the background it was doing some weird sorting. What is the impact of these background sortings on server performance? This should be neatly stacked with only the first stack touched instead of this spreading around.

The “item sorting function” seems to cause all kinds of server instability: inventory bugs, drop item bug, and even seems to be the cause of the “Falling through foundations bug,” and ultimately seems to lead to the server crashing and restarting. :scream:
