Same here always face away from you, no mods - official server.
Seen it mentioned a few time by @Tascha that they know about this. Been reported a few times.

We noted it down as soon as we got the first reports after the patch and it’s being looked into. Thanks for taking the time to report this

As a workaround, can you rotate/spin yourself when placing them?
I’ve found that they always face the same direction as you, so once you get them standing where you want them, can you spin yourself so they’re facing the way you want?
That’s how I normally place them because of the controller rotation bug.
