Censorship on Naming is a bit… excessive

The Talos Principle is one of my fave’s. I like any game that gives portal vibes.

They released the sequel last week. It’s even more fun.

Come for the puzzles, stay for the philosophy.

The game grapples with some very deep questions about the civilization and the society.

Wait they’ve already released it?

That’s all it is mate, but it’s 2023 and somebody needs to feel offended to feel important. :man_shrugging:t2:

It’s probably them damn sheilas that hate to admit they’re sheilas.

Post was flagged for some reason? :joy::tumbler_glass:

As you say… it’s 2023.

And with that, I repent more everyday to make my case for God’s Kingdom. :crossed_fingers:t2::pray:t2:

As I mentioned earlier. Bogan. :joy:

Told you there was something more to it… apparently it offended some.

I just wanted to have a gaelic name for my fiery redhead T3 Accursed bearer. Pretty gal I’ve had since I started the server and she’s my go-to for carrying my materials when I’m building… hence “shipwright.” She was there when I first built my port town on siptah and will be there until I quit the server… or accidentally get her killed. :expressionless:

Try Shelagh or Sheelagh

Some random post from Quora is not necessarily the best basis. There’re many, many similar posts the site gives us that say the direct opposite.

The term is old-fashioned. There’ll be nuance to it just as with most regional dialects and slang words. And whatever the word, somebody will find something offensive in it. Some string of letters will mean something mean in one language or the other. Heard some people get offended by being called a man or a woman without written, notarized consent.

But if we start banning words on every possible offense somebody might take somewere, we’re certain to overblock. Forbidding to name a character “Hitler” - okay, there’ll be few legitiame reasons for that, and a huge chunk of humanity will feed aggravated. But Sheila? What about all the actual Sheilas (the name, not the gender)? Shall we tell them their name is offensive, and they have to pick another name irl?

Edit: Surprised to see that “Hitler” isn’t blicked by the forum. Anybody want to try out if it’s blocked as character name?

Hitler is allowed on Xbox. Some edgy boy had it as his clan name for a bit. :weary:

He changed it to Germany after someone threatened to report.

Could you test on Single-Player? As I’ve shown, there seems to be no censor on PC Single-Player, so it’d be interesting to see whether it’s different on PS Single-Player.

It kinda makes sense that on Single-Player, the only one who could possibly get offended is the player himself, so there’s no need for a filter. But I’m surprised that Funcom bothered to make different filter settings onto SP and public servers.

And of course, would be interesting to know whether private servers are affected. Is there perhaps an admin setting for the filter?

Yeah… possibly… but just not the same. :face_holding_back_tears:

Archaic slang or not, doesn’t change the fact that they added it. Whatever the reason, it’s a stupid addition to the censorship pool.

Just checked. No censorship at all on single player. I can’t confirm private servers since I don’t have one though. You’ll have to ask someone else about that.

It makes me smile, all things considered. But the stereotype about mature people not playing videogames is completely outdated.
