Let’s not debate this here, but if you believe social justice, environmental concens, etc, equals wokism, man, I believe you’re dead wrong. By the way, you and your behavior are completely different from how “the woke” usually act, even if on occasion you share common concerns and ideals. That makes all the difference. I’ll go a little further and say that “the woke” are a perversion of you.

A friend logged in after years and get the message that he need to change the name. He had ‘long dong’ in his name. But that must happen when he was offline so no other player that report this.
I mean that is not realy offensive to anybody. And also I read here about names I don’t even know why they could be offensive to someone.
I can run around naked, and slay everything into pieces… What is the plan of funcom with this censorship? Who is the trigger for that? Tencent?
If that please remove blood, breasts, penises, weapons and many more so it could be a game for children… And let’s call it Sims?
Shouldn’t they also ban their own wording in this game? For example thrall? Or all the bad words the npc are saying?
You know who “they” are. Race baiters. People that instrumentalize minority groups for their own benefit. People like these don’t give a flying f about the people they are supposed to support and represent. They are in it for themselves, doing their best to keep imaginary racism alive while the real one passes unchecked. This goes for racism, but also applies to sexism, ableism and what have you. And then there are those who use the bad example these people/organizations give to pretend social problems and inequalities don’t exist, as if all was solved already, when there’s still plenty to be done, but not as they do. Their common denominator is selfishness. They care about themselves. That’s all. They will also use any good willed idiot that doesn’t see through it.

the whole woke thing started as part of the blm movement, and just represented the idea that someone was aware of social justice issues. the word was co-opted by uninformed college kids who wanted to show their friends who un-racist they were, and then started applying this term to awareness of other forms of social justice.
then the rightwing radio machine took the word woke, and decided it meant that those people that are offended by everything, and presented that narrative everywhere, turning woke into a dirty word. this was based on the perception that the people who were declaring themselves to be aware of social justice issues were taking it too far and fighting against things that didn’t actually need to be fought against. from where i stand, this is a strawman argument, as i don’t know anyone, except maybe the silly college kids with chips on their shoulders, who actually thinks that social justice issues = being offended. that equivalency was put on them by pundits on the other side. i don’t personally know of any progressive who said “i am woke, that means i embrace some sort of leftist version of facism.” i have seen plenty of folks who are not progressive put those words into the mouths of people who never said them.
at the end of the day, i still strongly suspect that the word grape is banned because the algorithm / filter is just an awful piece of tacked on code. i highly doubt it is because there is a vast left-wing conspiracy that is offended by grapes, or that is actively trying to make a video game less fun.

Sheila is quite common in my country. We even have a singer of that name. Why would it be considered a bad name in Australia? A name is just a name.

My first thought when I see this name, is that it’s an Asian name translated with latin alphabet. Maybe it just depends on the culture of the one reading it.
That’s why I made a clear distinction between the left and “the woke”. The woke, a self congratulatory term that was just a bad idea, are in it for themselves, for many reasons but the right one.
It’s not just college kids. I wish that was the case. That would be harmless. They’ll grow out of it. It’s the people who will use good ideas, legitimate concerns and a valid view of society, for their own benefit. This is not a left vs right issue. That’s a smoke screen and it’s working wonders.
Let me put it simply. Vanguard, Blackrock, State Street, alphabet, meta and so on don’t give a crap about your social justice or ecological concerns. But they’ll use you dry for theirs.
As I said, this is not about college kids. Some might be idiots, too vocal and so on, but they are harmless… and they are being used as tools both by imbeciles that should know better and by very shaddy groups with their own very elitist agendas.

as a socialist i couldn’t agree more that those money-grubbing corporatations pretend to care about social justice issues. it is expedient for them to do so. they also don’t care about the environment, or about anything other than the accumulation of wealth and the subsequent protecting of that accumulation so that it can’t be redistributed.
and jmk1999: i am sorry that we hijacked your thread with political discussion. it was primarily my fault, as i called bullshit in a specific instance where i believe it was warranted. but i don’t want to annoy you, so i will do my best to stop engaging

The only people who should be offended are people whose real name is Sheila, not because they are called Sheila, but because their name is frowned upon by others. It is so stupid.
By censoring real life names, it feels like the ones censoring it are bullying those who actually have that name.

Both are used for the same thing, though: for dismissing the person’s points of view by the simple act of applying a label to them.
“You’re a leftist so I don’t bother listening to you.”
“You’re woke so I don’t bother listening to you.”
It doesn’t matter if the person has a good point or if they’re right. If the other party disagrees with them, they don’t need to come up with any kinds of rational counterarguments because they invalidate the other person in their mind.
No-one’s really completely immune to this, of course. Our interpretation is always skewed by our opinion on the person we’re communicating with. If it’s someone who shares a political approach with me, I tend to interpret what they say more favorably than if the person is on the other wing. Or, if I remember a person used to act as a jerk on the CE forums, I’m less likely to agree with them even if their idea is good.
But at least I recognize this phenomenon in myself so I can at least try to consciously counteract it. Most people don’t.
So, rather than trying to cast blame for the excessive word filtering on any particular demographic group we happen to dislike, I would recommend focusing on asking Funcom to apply some damn common sense to the filtering. If they want to censor every word that might offend someone, they need to remove all words from the game. Considering that there are thousands of languages in the world, most of which have at least some sort of profanities, the odds that any string of phonemes can be interpreted as offensive in some language are extremely high.

You make a fair point, but it would be just playing pretend if I told you I ignored which group of people seem to compete about ways to feel offended. The last one I heard was that saying “good morning” was racist!
We can willfully choose to ignore what started and keeps fueling censorship of various kinds in gamming, but I doubt this will help reverting the situation.
In the very particular case of this game, considering the originality of its content, it might be just lazzyness. Somehow I can’t see CE turning woke. It’s impossible.
Anyway, you made a good point, especially when we apply it in our personal life. When I meet someone, I don’t tend to assume much about that person until I’m given reasons.
