At the very least, the Challenges should be extended. We have lost time in which we could achieve them. There would be no reason to continue paying for battle pass if the time allotted continues to be shortened by errors that are no fault of our own.
The Authentication issue lasted for approximately 63 hours.
Assuming the Chapter 3 Live release is not delayed, Chapter 2 battle pass will last for 98 days or 2352 hours.
What did 63 hours cost you? $2? This issue probably cost Funcom a lot more than that.
Not much of a community if it can’t handle 63 hours of connection difficulty.
Ha! I have never been afraid to speak my mind when Funcom does something I disagree with.
In this scenario, I don’t doubt they did everything they could to resolve the issue as quickly as possible over a weekend when most of their staff would not be available. The only thing I could really fault them for is not communicating enough, but even then, Ignasi was probably not supposed to be working when he was posting updates.
Chapter 2 ends when Chapter 3 begins. They will not delay launching Chapter 3 because of this. They might delay it because of the technical issues that delayed the PTB, but not for this.
A more realistic request would be for them to give increased challenge multipliers for the remainder of the Chapter like they did at the end of Chapter 1. Honestly, I’m not sure why they haven’t done so already.
Only online play was hindered by this issue and people still could continue their BattlePass challenge farm in Single Player.
By your own logic, Funcom will actually lose money if players finish the battle pass simply because it gives CC back to the player. So hindering their progress is actually beneficial to their moneymaking.
I’m somewhat curious to know the name of your server simply to know what server I and other sane players should avoid in the future.
The Battle Pass on the most part is a one-time purchase. Since you can get refunded the costs by completing enough of the challenges. They are not that hard. I was playing Icarus regularly during this Age’s chapter and still finished the chapter BP by the 6th week. Mainly doing harvesting, crafting, slaying mobs and visiting Leyshrines which did not take very long. I skipped anything that would take too long. The first chapter, I did it all on the official server. Second chapter, I did majority on the official server. There were a few challenges I ended up doing on my private server but either case, never spent too much time doing them. There is still two weeks to complete the challenges.
The money they are trying to make is the Bazaar since they are continuous types of purchases.
I have 5 servers, and assuming the servers were offline for 3.5 days, its roughly $8.75 cost lost in total for the game down time. (I pay $910 annual for my CE servers).
None on my servers’ players complained about the outage, although they wished they could log in. My player base is very patient with issues. They know the drill since I am sure the patch will have my servers down for most of the day for mod updates.
Still chuckling. Great reply. My little 2 year old would have certainly been holding her breath till the smiling made her laugh.
I should have included the Bazaar.
And you make a strong argument. I dont know how it works with yours, but with ours, we make $0. We set it up as a zero sum situation. Losing players means shutting down servers. No one running our community makes money. It’s 100% volunteer. Issues like this have the potential to destroy it. I didnt think my request unreasonable under these circumstances.
Assuming your server host does standard 30-day billing cycles, you lost 8.75% of that time. Probably pay what, $20? That’s $1.75, you can’t even get a good cup of coffee for that much.
Lol
If I get a donation, it’s a bonus. (Total approximately $850 the past 4 years, although $200+ was from other admins excluding my friend’s contributions). We pay for our servers out of pocket. My friend currently pays for 3 Icarus servers that is running him $574 annually. I cover majority of the Conan Exiles Servers with a few donations received over the years (plus my friend did cover some of the cost initially). Plus, the website cost ($418) and $1,473 so far in donations given to various mod authors.
$200 was from another friend who helped offset some costs, which I had included as part of the $850 donations.
So overall the costs of the servers, donations to mod authors and the website cost us approximately $5,769. Of which I paid out $3,935. By far the most expensive online game (or any game) I ever played, and that doesn’t count all the costs for the game, DLCs, Battle Pass and Bazaar I spent on so far (another $197). ESO is 2nd in costs, although its all game related. $1,847 + $405 donations to guild members/guild website (ESO)
I think the first mistake you made is your choice of words in the title.
“Compensation”…
During these 3 days we have seen way more people with… (I’m being gentle with the description) …delusional levels of entitlement… people demanding refunds even thou they purchased the game several years ago and had several hundreds of hours played… people thinking the entire world revolves around them and funcom should be their IRL slaves / thralls because they paid a small amount of fee for a game license one time in their lives… and so on and so forth…
So when someone makes a thread titled “Compensation for Authentication error”, at this point that will immediately piss off the people like Tephra who spent the weekend trying to be helpful and informing everyone of the situation one after another…
It’s not easy trying to explain to brick-headed people over and over and over again that you can blame Funcom for many things, but when the shit hits the fan in this manner and it’s even the weekend, they didn’t do a bad update or change anything and the issues began with a service outage that was outside of their control, that’s not something that’s going to be magically fixed by angry complaints no matter how unfortunate the situation is…
I would say that’s one of the issues.
I believe what @Sir.Henry.Vale was trying to say is that he makes -$910
Hehe, I do not have to make any donations to run the servers. I run and pay the servers because I wanted to. Any donations are a nice gift / offset. Granted the donations later year ended up going to 2 new servers that I added to the server cluster.
If you don’t file said revenue on your taxes, you are entitled nothing. Donations are simply donations. FC and even Microsoft are not responsible for any income derived from hosting servers.
And if you need players to keep the lights on… why should anyone ever think to play under that? Have you been upfront and honest with your players that if an event like this one happens, the server will go down and thus everyone who spent hundreds of hours playing lose it all? Even worse, the community that they are apart of can just disappear one day because the ‘owner’ couldn’t pay the bill?
A good server owner budgets their server costs. Taking donations isn’t wrong. But relying solely on them is a recipe for disaster.
I really hope your donation section of your discord doesn’t have periodic messages saying things along the lines of “we need donations to keep our wonderful server up and running.” I’ve seen servers do this to guilt their players into giving. And its wrong.
Xevyr, I wish I could give that post more than one like ![]()
So, uh, going back to the original issue of extending the battle pass, do we know what, if anything, FC plans to do about the lost time? It could be as simple as just giving everyone extra x10 bonuses. I finished my BP more than a month ago, but my friend was sitting at around rank 45 or so when the errors struck. He could probably still make it to 60, but he doesn’t have as much free time during the week and has to try and get cram sessions in on weekends. The timing on these errors was unfortunate precisely for people like him who don’t have much leisure time during the week.
And before people try to invoke the entitlement card again, no, neither he nor I expect or demand FC do anything in this situation. We just think it would be nice if some kind of compensation was planned, however small.
They will probably do as they did before. If the targeted number of players hasn’t completed it, they will give bonuses. I don’t know if the outages actually affected this or not in a large way.
Personally I would assume not. Everyone who completes the battlepass early on has long done so. Everyone who does it later… hasn’t started yet. And if people did start right before the outage… then they have Fifteen 10x bonuses accrued they can use. They would have only lost ‘time’ if the outage goes longer than 4 days or if they had unused accrued bonuses when it started.
Starting today, you could easily complete the battlepass before the time is up.
how come you dont have the chalenges done by now? do you know you can do them in single player as admin ? its so easy m8
Is your friend playing on PC? If so, he can ultra-optimize his BP advancement with no more than 10-15 minutes of single-player time a day. Probably 5 minutes, really, but I like to blow up my estimates just in case ![]()
It takes a grand total of roughly 3 hours to complete the battle pass from 0 to 60 by dividing that 3 hours over the course of a week 20-30 minute sessions or even less just by casually spawning things in singleplayer admin mode and only doing epic or higher challenges and only until you have multipliers left.
So if it needs to be rushed, that can very easily be done, the Chapter 2 pass is much easier than what we had in Chapter 1 and the multipliers stack much higher.
See?
That’s a grand total of 25 10x multipliers… so just log in when you have time, do some of the purple and legendary ones quick in admin mode and you’ll be fine.
So technically it’s not really necessary… however, I’m sure that after all this fiasco they’ll think of something just to make people happy whether it is needed or not
so you might get some extra multipliers and such
I’m just guessing here ofc, but we’ll see
I lost players=donations. Which means Im going to have to close a server, maybe 2. Which will probably mean more loss. Again… No frikin clue how it works.
You couldn’t retain people due to a 63 hour outage? You’re the server owner, you could have jumped on disabling decay right away and incentivized people to come back once it got resolved. Maybe they left due to the pessimistic approach and the owner running the server like a business instead of for fun
