It looks like the Yamatai Lantern from the Bazaar cannot be placed anywhere in the world. I tried placing the hand-crafted version and using creative mode. The end result is always the same - even when the item outline is green, it either gives an “Invalid building placement” or pretends to place something (some grass might disappear), yet the lantern is not there.
