Repair kits are good for one thing: repairing looted equipment you want to illusion. I often don’t bother crafting gloves or shoes for my thralls because it’s not cost-effective use of hardened leather; so instead I give them, er, second-hand Cimmerian heavy gloves and boots. But items can be illusioned only at full durability, so I use repair kits (also looted) to fix those boots and gloves. Also, if I manage to find a good-looking but statistically unimpressive article of clothing (say, Khari Overseer), I can repair that with a kit and use it as an illusion.

It doesn’t matter how low their durability gets if they’re worn by thralls - only that the durability is at its current maximum when illusioned.
