Decay Timer Clarification Needed

Could someone please clarify what is required to reset the decay timer? Do you need to be near structures/followers in the game, or can you just reset the timer by logging into the game?

You must be near/at your structure to reset the decay timer.

Also, there is a period after the timer has expired that your structure is in a DECAYED state but is not despawed. During that time, any other play can force it to despawn if they are next to it.

What Pugilist wrote is correct for structures, but for followers it is enough to log in, you do not need to get into the vicinity of your followers like you need for structures.
