Pretty straightforward suggestion. In an animal pen, instead of them just making infinite dung, have a chance for eggs from certain egg-laying creatures. Makes no sense why we can find the nests of many of these creatures with eggs in the wild, but no matter how much we feed our own they’ll never lay even one egg.
The following are pets that in theory are capable of laying normal eggs;
Crested Lacerta
Crocodile
Komodo
Ostrich
Pelican
Salamander
Sand Reaper
Shaleback
Shoebill
Turtle (Giant most likely, but the little one should still be capable of it)
This small change would make getting feasts more viable for people who don’t live near very scattered eggs, and would make me want to die significantly less than trying to crouch-swing the same nest a hundred times to get one clump
From a technical standpoint this change would be pretty easy to implement, just add a secondary item in the dung recipe for these pets and set the weight for it. This is already used by some pets for ichor, feathers, and even in rocknose economics. As for concerns about the eggs expiring too quickly, either the duration could be increased or pens could provide longevity preservation similar to fish traps or planters already do.
I’m not against the idea, but adding egg-laying mechanics isn’t going to replace gathering eggs with a black blood pick in the sand reaper hive near the Black Galleon. Crouch-swing is easy if you time it right
Btw is it just me but salamander has problems with more than just eggs it does not have hatchlings at all?
Some days ago i managed to capture 2, but now, only adult versions are spawning?
…Gimmmeee back my war salamandeer!!! =( (this is the unit from Age of Mythology btw, similar setting to the Conan universe)
Plus efficient harvest! Single pickup items count as last swing, I do this regularly, and a full stack of 50 with one hit is pretty nice. Mushrooms, eggs, oysters, rare lotuses are not a rare resource this way.
But I am on @Jimbo’s side, even with this perk, egg-layers should lay eggs, it’s logical. Just like gold/silver-vein rocknoses produce gold/silver.
I am surprised to see you suggest this. You have surely been around long enough to have seen this exact suggestion pop up several times.
I don’t oppose this idea, but pets producing eggs is not currently viable as they decay far too quickly. Only the Armored pen would have a decay rate remotely close to reasonable, but even it would require you to hover nearby to grab your eggs soon after production.
Default decay is 10 minutes.
Small/Normal pens reduce decay by 50%: 20 minutes.
Reinforced pen reduces decay by 75%: 40 minutes.
Armored pen reduces decay by 90%: 1 hour, 40 minutes.
They could increase decay time for eggs, or they could give animal pens unique decay rates just for eggs that make them last even longer, but then you aren’t just asking for eggs anymore, are you?
Yes, and I’ve been on the pro-egg side the whole time.
There are two solutions to this, which you highlight. Firstly and simplest, eggs could be given a longer timer. All this takes is putting one new number into a single checkbox, this is how my old mod was able to make camels produce milk without it expiring too quick. Otherwise, giving animal pens a longevity to items inside them similar to berries in planters or fish in traps would go a long way. The option for both is already present in the game’s files, and theoretically wouldn’t be too hard to transplant. I could probably find a way to implement this myself via a mod, but this suggestion I feel would benefit all players and give a more general push towards both a viable reason to have some of these pets, but also to encourage more players to get into farming.
Growing berries never replaced going wild on bushes with a sickle, but it at least gave players a usable passive production that would help bolster their stockpile of them. Since 3.0 finally patched drying them for seeds, it’s totally renewable to get them, albeit in slow rates. Eggs would fit a similar niche, with active obviously gaining more sooner, but passive generating smaller quantities consistently over time.
Spider eggs are those things in gossamer. Spiders should produce gossamer, not eggs. They should produce gossamer anyway, whether eggs get any love or not.
Eggs can already be found near Sand Reapers, so they should lay regular eggs.
Scorpions do not lay eggs, their eggs hatch internally and they give birth to live young.
I’m all for this in animal pens, though the decay timer will obviously be a problem. I think it might be more difficult than just altering a number, only because it would be a unique number for a subset of animals in a pen as opposed to a universal number for all creature types in that pen. I’m not a programmer, but I’m at least aware that saying something is easy to implement isn’t the same as that something actually being easy.
Regarding decay timers, I’ve always wondered if portable refrigeration is possible. I get the idea from Ark, where one of the canines had a special pack that served as a miniature refrigerator. I think it would be useful to implement a saddle fridge, either for pack animals, bearers, or both. And on that note, to have animal pens come with a built-in refrigeration mechanic similar to the preservation boxes. Stick some ice in, and presto, no need to worry about the decay timer. That might be an easier solution than creating a unique timer just for eggs and the like.
On a side note, thank you, Funcom, for one-upping Ark and having preservation boxes pause the decay timer rather than just extending it. Lost a lot of good materials in Ark because some items still spoiled insanely quickly even when inside an ice box.
Neither am I, but I’ve actually already made a mod in the past that has provided a perishable food item produced in the animal pen so I’m familiar with how to implement it.
There are multiple recipes per animal, as technically each item they are fed is a different recipe, although results are generally the same save for some dung variance. There is a ton of recipes that would need to be altered, but I’m sure they probably have some form of bot or algorithm for that. If not I volunteer myself to be broken on the wheel and manually change them myself, I’m that invested in this.
I am all in! It doesn’t have to do if we know or not to farm (harvest) easy eggs!
It doesn’t have to do with how many times this is suggested in the past!
It has to do with a beautiful mechanism that’s really missing from the game and we want it!
I do agree that I don’t want my eggs to go spoiled! So I suggest for another farming construction called “nest”.
I don’t care if crocks, or locusts give me eggs! I need all the beautiful pet birds we have in this game to finally find a reason in pve and why not PvP bases! From nests we will collect eggs and feathers which is totally logical!
No matter what devs decide, we need egg farming indoor!
Well since we are going fully domesticated, and there really is no SURVIVAL aspect left in the game, lets just have chickens that lay eggs.
After the next update, we’ll have trees, hedges, etc. So do not forget to make a Gardener thrall we can catch.
And little maid/butler outfits for our domesticated thralls.
Lots of people actually play this game “domesticated”. They don’t feel safe to do any move on the map if they won’t build a shelter first and create their first gear! I even know people that after lvl 60 play this game domestically. It is a safe option, nothing to blame here. I respect this option 1st because safe is good and 2nd it is how they have fun in this game .
Yes please, and chicken houses why not, I like this option too, count me in, .
I would love this aspect to gain greater gravity, I beg you to create a post about it JJ, this is serious my dear friend. Truly I want more survival thrill in this game!
What a beautiful idea to have a Thrall going around our plantation in our base and do the tinkering e mote , .
We have hats, boots, gloves, I think I have all I need for my maid lol .
We say “between serious and joke” here. With this mood my friend you make exceptional points, well done, .
Please think about of my wish to start the survival conversation, thank you for chatting .
