I believe the fight agaisnt “big” creatures (like that giant spider or the elephants, etc) do not look right because there lack a feeling of “mass” to the monsters. Simply being near them should be dangerous.
player characters should be pushed back a lot (and maybe damaged/knocked back) when those big creatures are “rotating” or moving around.
From a technical point of view, I can see the elephant as a “spike pallisade” where being close to it triggers something. Except that this “triggered” effect should only be in effect when the beasts move.
