I’ve always run a Cimmerian Berserker thrall on this game and have not done these two quests yet (I know at least one is bugged). Is it worth getting them as companions or is the berserker just as good in combat?

They seem roughly equal to berserkers to me however I have not done the testing that would be required for a direct head to head comparison.
Berserkers usually have more hp’s but Freya and Lui make up for it in other ways.
It is possible to get either one with crappy growth stats however that will result in sub par performance.
There are some bugs with their special abilities that hopefully get fixed shortly.
I would not recommend Lui’s decoy ability because it takes forever to cast and he does it immediately on every mob. Normal enemies are dead before it finishes casting so it’s even worse than utterly worthless for anything but big bosses. Even on those he only seems to cast it once.
I paired the two of them together for the Sacred Hunt event mobs and was impressed with how fast the mobs died and how much health the thralls had left. Their abilities seem tailor made for those mobs.
Obviously berserkers can handle anything in the game. Freya and Lui are just a different means to the same end. The quests are entertaining enough that I’d say do them once just to experience them. Plus there some crafting recipes you get as well.
