I doubt you will get a reply here but it is probably worth mentioned how is the server hosted.

We started getting this too recently. Server is hosted by ourselves with the DSL.

Narrelle, they mentioned the dedicated server launcher is how the server is hosted.

That might be a VPS but not likely.

This is not my question though. This is probably a network issue so the question is how/where is it hosted. At home, some server provider, etc.

Y’know…this has been happening to me too.

Local hosted machine in the same room, wired net connection. Server Launcher tool used (latest build).

ZERO mods.

I don’t have all those other details though. Just lately been getting randomly kicked.

Sorry, didn’t see I had replies to the post for some reason.

It’s hosted on a bare metal dedicated server, not a virtual dedicated server like GPortal and Nitrado. It’s an actual setup inside a datacenter. I have a 48ms ping to the server as it’s a local datacenter and I still get kicked. Ran MTR and Traceroute and I have low packet loss and fairly low jitter.

Internet speed for the dedicated server is unmetered 10 Gbps upload and download speed.

One of the servers I play on is a similar type and it too has been dropping people. I get dropped about once every hour or two. Just boom… no connection. All the other servers I play on are fine. But the one running the dedicated server drops people quite often.

Just part of the game. Deal with it.

For sure, it’s not a problem for me - but maybe FC wants to know about it?

No need to be rude though.

Not being rude. Just need to get over it and play the game we have.

So when there is a bug that could be looked into and possibly fixed - maybe even easily - we should just not say anything at all instead of making people aware of the problem so the game could be improved upon?

Just because people bring up issues doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the game, and obviously we do still play the game we have or we wouldn’t be here right? It is rude to tell someone to “deal with it”, there are much nicer ways you could have worded what you wanted to say.

You could have said “Unfortunately it comes with the territory of the game, all we can do is play and enjoy what we have” and it would have come across a lot better. The only reason people take the time to even report actual issues related to the performance of the game is because we like the game and want it to continue to get better. If people didn’t like the game they wouldn’t take the time to come on here and talk about the issues, they would just not play any more and call it a wash. We think this game is worth improving upon because we enjoy it.

Same issue occurs for me. Will link over to toolguy but I actually doubt its the dedi program.

I have gigabit and a modem that’s less than 2 months old so I doubt its local network.

noticed this on my server as well… wonder if it’s tied to the age 0 issue as well… we have dealt with fatal errors, random disconnects, lag spikes… i host from streamline servers so i don’t think it’s a dedicated server issue i think it’s a game file bug

This happens to me on official servers 1732 and 6158 on a regular basis. Sometimes I get DC’d with this message 2-3 times within a single hour and several times it has booted me out of steam all together. I’m not sure if this is a game file in a recent update or a Steam issue, but it is definitely not a network issue. These DC’s started fairly recently too, I would say within the last month and a half, so possibly has to do with update 2.8.

I don’t normally monitor threads other than my own DSL thread, but somebody linked it to me.

I’m 99% certain that does not have anything to do with the launcher, and it’s actually easy to check:

  • Start the server
  • Close the launcher

There you go.

If the game keeps running without any issue, it possibly-may-be related to something the launcher does, but if it crashes by itself or kick players, it means it’s just the server.

So apparently that happens both on modded (original post) and vanilla servers, so can probably exclude mods as well.

And apparently that also happens on official servers, so that confirms that this has nothing to do with the either the launcher (GPortal does not use it) or mods (the official servers don’t have any), but also that it happens on professional grade hardware and internet lines.

Now, what’s not sure is if the problem is on the servers, or on the clients.

These things are hard to debug, generally that involves collecting log files from both clients and server and comparing them side by side to see when connections happen, and around time of disconnection check if there was anything special on each side before it happens.

Would also be interesting to see if that happens to people who run a client on the same local network as the server, because that would exclude problems with internet stability.

Does this only occur on your private server? Or have you seen it on other servers?

This disconnect occurs on official servers as well, not just private. I play on PC (Steam official #1732 & #6158). It may be a G-Portal issue, a Steam issue, or possibly something in the 2.8 update as this issue started recently. If I get the opportunity, I will post more info about the DC. I agree with @Toolguy that this may be very difficult to troubleshoot but I appreciate any efforts toward trying to fix/pinpoint the problem.

*EDIT
It just happened again and it is kicking me all the way out of Steam. I suspect the other times I may have been kicked out of Steam as well but it reconnected so fast that I just didn’t realize it. My suspicions are beginning to lean more towards this being a semi recent Steam update.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a well thought out response. I truly appreciate it!

Sometimes it is almost predictable. One player will get kicked from the server. Then the next. Then the next, then the next. Almost like clockwork like the server just went one by one disconnecting people. Once the first person gets booted, we all just kind of wait our turn.

It hasn’t happened as much as of late, maybe it was a steam issue that was being worked on but the next time it happens I will try to pull the server log and get a copy of the client logs from my players and see if anything interesting is there and will report back any findings.

EDIT: The following statement was incorrect:

As far as I know Exiles does not use any Steam stuff after it has started.
When Exiles was released, it was relying on Steam, but a couple years ago all that was replaced by the FLS (Funcom Live Service) thing.

It’s easy to test: Launch the game, shut-down steam, the game should still be running.

EDIT: FLS still relies on the platform the game is running on, as they provide FLS with the store authentication, which also allows us to check entitlements and other store / platform features.

Which bring another question: Do also players using the Windows game store, or even players on console suffer from the same issue?

I don’t know how FLS works but I’m pretty sure the game is still tied to Steam somehow. I tested it the way you suggested: started Conan, waited for successful log into FLS, then shut down Steam. The result is that Conan also shuts down.

I have no way to know or test this. :man_shrugging:
