It does include SWL and sheds a positive light on the game.
It also claims Black Desert Online is a good game or that Neverwinter, Rift, SWTOR, LotRO, and old school Runescape “flew under the radar” which is just absurd on it’s face. I question the writer of that article’s judgement.
It says flew under radar at release. I think may be lower user scores?
I do know BDO Took long time to be popular. Now everyone I know say I should play it.
BDO was popular pretty quickly really. It was released earlier in Korea, Japan and Russia than in North America and Europe and the buzz around it was pretty well estabilished by then. In its first month of sales in North America and Europe, it sold over 400,000 copies, and after its first year had 3.4 million registered players in NA and EU. In January this year, they said they’d reached 30 million players.
Rift had a million players in their first 6 months after launch.
SWTOR had an insanely massive launch, with a million subscribers within 3 days of their launch.
I’m wondering if the radar was actually turned on if they missed all that.
BDO is a Korean MMO. That’s all you need to know. It’s bad. Why? Because like most Korean MMOs or mobile games it’s massively pay to win and borderline predatory in that regard.
Rift was one of the first heavily promoted “WoW killers” and it was a massive success. At least at first. It’s popularity did rapidly drop off after a while. Very rapidly.
But about the other entries on the list, I don’t know Albion Online and have only heard of TERA in passing so I can’t say whether or not they belong on the list, but probably because I’ve had my ear to the ground on MMOs for the better part of 25 years, although I have really stopped paying a lot of attention after about 2014/2015. Dungeons and Dragons Online and TSW definitely do belong on the list. Both overlooked and extremely underrated. DDO came out in 2006 if you can believe that. Neverwinter only came out in 2013, but got instantly more popular. I think because it was set in the established world that Baulder’s Gate and other related games had already ingrained in the minds of gamers over the years. Still to this day they use Minsc and Boo on all of their promotional artwork even though they are extremely minor bit characters in the game, but they’re iconic.
Really? I hate D&DO. Every map where fight look the same to me. I don’t think compares to SWL.
I dont think he was comparing the gameplay
(But its totally normal to reply to someones comment and then claim your reply was not related to what they said)
The 2017 game builds upon the original Secret World MMO […]
Damn. It’s The Secret World (TSW), not Secret World…
I didn’t think he was but I was
If you can get past the pay to win elements, (that are there, no denying that,) BDO has some interesting gameplay mechanics, with keyboard and click combos being used for increased damage. It’s got very active PVP, though part of the monetization is regular “balance” patches which change the FotM class frequently. Most classes have another class that will totally pwn them in PVP, which is popular with people who like arena style combat.
TERA is another Korean fantasy almost-anime style game like Blade & Soul. It’s got a lot of movement in the combat, and it’s pretty fun. It’s another game with reticle targeting, which often divides the audience. But again, it didn’t really fly under the radar - 26 million players a few years ago.
Rift had some good ideas, but didn’t really manage to distinguish itself from WoW enough. It was successful at launch, but many people felt it was just WoW with better graphics and public groups. The raids ended up feeling a bit pay to win, which put a lot of people off.
I can’t. Not for any game, especially one whose business model is based on “free to play” mobile games.
