Exactly. Its not like we are asking for a glowing path to where we are going. Just to know what direction we are facing
I get around without a compass by knowing landmarks.

me too, but sometimes i end up straying to the side, where as a compasswould keep me in astraight line
Compasses are, irl, quite simple to make - but the materials not so easy to find in nature. All it takes is a sliver of magnetite (polarized iron ore - which is usually a meteorite fragment… star metal?) that you can set on a leaf floating in water.
