Giving a recovering alcoholic a six pack a malt beverage is a great example of giving someone a choice actually strips them of their freedom.
In this particular situation with Conan Exiles, if by giving us players the toggle, are we missing out on getting another toggle that might be better for everyone? Are we giving a subsection of the community the momentum to ask for more? We already have comments claiming the devs are evil in one thread because the game focuses on doing bad things over what the commenter thinks is ‘good’. Its the old give an inch and they take a mile argument.
I don’t exactly trust the intentions of those asking for a toggle in a game like this. Those who tend to favor censorship start out with claims of choice and freedom but at the end of the day their intention is to restrict such. For some of them the toggle will be the first step. Then it will be other things.
I’m not accusing of those in this thread of doing this. Many of them are probably just looking for a setting so that they can play their game a bit more openly or what have you. But there’s a good percentage in there that will bite the hand that feeds them. And well, I don’t trust anyone.
Its also a bit too much of a coincidence that many people claiming that other parts of the game are too evil, too dark, too villainous, etc right after the dev posted in this thread. The very statement “The devs are evil” because of sorcery is a direct attempt to shame them into being more susceptible to censorship.
