Do I see a NPC camp on the other shore? Maybe that is the reason you cannot build nearer to them.

Usually when that’s the case it says something like “Building not allowed here.” When it says “invalid building location” it’s often because of bad terrain (or lack thereof if you try to build in mid air) or there’s an object or another building in the way or something along those lines.

Its not the camp, 100%, you can build very close to that camp, i know this cause i have my main base on an official server just a few meters from that camp
