I’m playing official PvE server. I was killed by a cat while logged out. Is this normal?
If you were logged out in an area which is not safe, then …yes.
Even if it’s PVE you still need to find a safe place to ‘leave your body’ while you log out, eg: a base.

Well, it would have been safe if thrall AI was half as effective as enemy AI. I had a guard who could have protected me, but clearly did not.

A pvp habit is to store all your items in a chest before logging out. That way even if you die (due to something like poison in pvp) your items aren’t lost.

Try a different sleeping location before getting online
My clanmember had this issue too, though on PvE-C, the log telling he killed himself
When he changed to sleeping on another location it didn’t happen again.
Also, don’t sleep on top of your bed.
Yeah, that is absolutely absurd! I learned that the hard way long ago. Interestingly I never learned you could be killed while logged out in PvE until a year+ of playing, it just never happened to me. I thought it was PvP only. And of course now it happens when I’m loaded with valuable stuff that sucks to lose. 
You can even be killed by players using spikes… thats why i never log out in buildable area, or where like the others said NPCs are around. Find a sneaky hiding spot 
Also you maybe want to wear a sandstorm mask or make sure theres enough shelter around you.
The thrall was there, and on guard, I logged out at my in-progress base. I was fine for hours until the server restarted (event logs showed the server restart, then I die a few min later), so honestly I wonder if there’s something goofy in the load order of things when the server starts up.
- load players
- load enemies and attack players
- load followers to guard now-dead players

Another player can lead animals on top of your body while fighting and your dead.
LOL ! So thats what happen to buddy at my house. I logged in and a dead player was there outside my door. My dancer who was outside was fine, but it was obvious he was trying to get my thrall killed.
Then again my thrall had poison daggers so theres that too…
Griefer had become the griefee !
You could have died because of multiple things.
Process something in furnaces or cook something.
Log out in your room above it and die because of being extremly hot.
Its actually kind of comforting to know that even in the exiled lands, you can still be old enough to pass quietly in your sleep…
