Maelstrom: Unchained

I believe it would be a much more fun and unique experience to have the maelstrom form around different areas of Siptah, rather than being centralized, since it no longer destroys structures/bases. It would keep everyone at every level on their toes and learning to adapt and become ready for surprises at all times. It would make for much more intense purges too [if the players are lucky].

The maelstrom, though, is sourced from the central tower

It’s sourced by a wizard that is (or was) in the central tower. And no one said that power like that isn’t volatile. The effects start from the sky and, in it’s end, is funneled into the tower. That can take place even if the storm starts in a different location.

A settable radius would be cool

Please no. For a newly created character a Maelstrom covering the whole island will make nearly impossible to survive it. Creatures from the Maelstrom are too dangerous when you’re low level. And if it covers the whole island there’ll be no place to run away from them.

I already think the entire map of Siptah is entirely too dark. And aside from that, what level of fun would a new player have spending 15 minutes hiding out of reach of the maelstrom monsters?
