So given the never ending issues with landclaiming of resources, I had an idea for an alternative landclaim system. One of the things that has always bothered me, was that you can’t claim another’s castle/keep/city. In the real world, claiming an area is not dependent on who built the buildings, rather who controls the land. It’s the people that control it, and conquering a territory has as much to do with the resources on it as it does the man-made constructions that are contained there.
So what I would propose is that *thralls" determine landclaim, rather than foundations. First, I would carve up the map into zones that can be claimed. This could be made to exclude certain areas (like the brimstone lake, dungeons, etc) and do not completely connect. This would prevent massive sprawling connected structures from spanning the map and cutting off travel. These zones are then claimed by placing a thrall on it in guard state. If there are already thralls on a given territory, all could rush to the center of mass of all the thralls (provided they aren’t behind a locked door) and fight it out. Whatever clan’s thralls remain would therefore claim the land, like a standing army. The foundations and all property then on that territory would belong to the conquering clan. If no thralls are on a territory, it could be listed as “contested”. If all thralls that control a territory currently are behind a wall, this would still mean you would have to breach the structure to fight the thralls and gain landclaim.
This system would allow 24/7 raids without much downside imo since there would be less incentive to destroy a structure as you would want to potentially take possession of it. Now I admit, I don’t know if this kind of mechanic is feasible given the way the game is coded but I think it’s a bit more realistic for all the people who care about “immersion”. Thoughts? Slings? Arrows?
