Mythbusting: Lava Golems, Afflicts, and You

#1

There is a five year old myth regarding lava golems that needs to be squashed.

I’ve tried to squash it before, but I’m going to do it again, because it’s a pet peeve how persistent it is!

So, here’s the nature of all Lava Golems: Candescence/Scalding Crust
StarsmithScalding

This has been misinterpreted to mean that if the golem is afflicted with a DoT, it will gain a leech effect.

That is not the case!!

Observe, one afflicted Lava Golem:
ACTScalding1

Observe what the lava golem is not doing:
ACTScalding2

Now, here I am afflicted by the Primary Melt’s Burning…

Look at the lava golem! Those are the sure signs of a heal it has there! And sure enough…
ACTScalding3

Therefore, Candescence only procs when the tank is afflicted.

Scalding Crust is a whole other thing–it causes reflect damage on each hit. Burst damage tends to get reflected back in bursts. Like so:
Lava Golem’s Scalding Crust hits (Normal) you for 14 magical damage.
Your Deconstruct hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 245 magical damage.
Lava Golem’s Scalding Crust hits (Normal) you for 13 magical damage.
Your Deconstruct hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 245 magical damage.
You evade Lava Golem’s Scalding Crust.
Your Deconstruct hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 245 magical damage.
Molten Crossing hits (Normal) you for 98 magical damage.
You start using Deconstruct.
You successfully used Deconstruct.

Whereas afflicts do not proc Scalding Crust:
You afflict Lava Golem with Lingering Curse
Lava Golem’s Scalding Crust hits (Normal) you for 14 magical damage.
You start using Dread Sigil.
You successfully used Dread Sigil.
Your Dread Sigil hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 530 magical damage.
Your Lingering Curse hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 58 magical damage.
Your Lingering Curse hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 55 magical damage.
Your Lingering Curse hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 54 magical damage.
Your Lingering Curse hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 54 magical damage.
Your Lingering Curse hits (Normal) Lava Golem for 59 magical damage.

In conclusion…
IT IS SAFE TO AFFLICT ISATIS NASIRU MY GOD PEOPLE
If Isatis Nasiru comes back carrying a balloon, I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT AFFLICTING HIM.

Okay, but is it okay if I afflict the tank?

Nice post. Myths like this tend to take on a life of their own.

As a side note - any lava-like golem-like creature that may or may not be appearing near the end-ish of the month (or not) would definitely have the bug fixed where multihit abilities took multiple hits of reflect damage per activation period, instead of 1 hit per activation period.

Or maybe it’s just a bunch of balloons with angry faces drawn in sharpie. Hard to say.

One day I wish there was a bestiary section that allowed you to see all the buffs/debuffs/attacks a creature type has. I always find it a pain having to alt and hover over those tiny buttons.

I’d even settle for a game properly designed to make hovering (or getting the information some other way) while playing simple. And yes, this is my beating the tacked on reticle dead horse because if Funcom actually acknowledged the UI design has issues there it’d give me hope they’ll try to actually find a clever solution eventually.

I’ve thought of making something like that myself. I actually started to but couldn’t get it to work the way I wanted so it never got off the ground. My “Big Book of Buffs” may actually appear someday though. It would be a lot better for a searchable buff list to be in game, though.

In the mean time, Isatis Nasiru has a balloon.
