Ahhh, that is good to know! I already felt it was kind of silly since there are literally gear pieces with the word assassin in it.

What is this thread

Ok, I see the consensus is unanimously yes. But I’m surprised at how many don’t seem to understand why I asked the question in the first place. It’s a common rule in MMOs so I don’t really understand all the outrage and befuddlement. My mistake was not in thinking such rules exist but rather in assuming Conan Exiles would have a similar rule.

Many are asking me odd questions as if I’m the one making the rules. I don’t know why they make such rules I just know they do. I could speculate but that’s all it would be.

So when I saw the guy using the name Conan, in a Conan game, my thought was he might get in trouble for it at some point. And given how slow Funcom can be in noticing when someone is breaking the rules it might be some time before they act on it. That could have meant hours, days, weeks of effort potentially gone to waste and I didn’t want to see that happen to someone. I should not have made assumptions and should have checked the terms of service before saying anything. So I made a mistake there, lesson learned.

For what?

I thought I just said. Not clear enough? Besides, what difference does it make? My thinking clearly was in error and I’ve stated as such.

Sigh… fine! I’ll post

Last night I started typing a post here with “What even is this thread… and why am I tracking it?..”, but then decided against it

Okay, for clarification purposes, I know where OP was coming from… and he is correct on that front. Some MMOs have it as a rule within their naming policy that you are not allowed to use names that resemble those associated with the lore.
WoW started this pretty much I believe, and their purpose was to avoid any confusion since it was a MMO and things like that weren’t commonplace at the time, early players who were just starting out also took a while to get used to who’s who… what are players marked as and what are NPCs marked as… etc.

Bottom line, yes… if you were to make a wow character called “Illidain”, even thou it has an extra “i”, if discovered they would’ve simply flagged you up for a forced rename… so the next time you log in, you have to rename your character, while typing in the exact “Illidan” was already pre-filtered and didn’t allow you to register that name. (at least at the time… I have no idea of their current policies as I lost track after all the pandas and whatnot started showing up  ) They didn’t ban people for that as far as I know.

I am not enitirely sure, but I think some other games also adapted the same principle afterwards, however it’s most certainly not a general thing across all games.

In any case, no need to crucify OP over it, it was a harmless assumption and they thought they’d check with people on the forums, other than that, I truly don’t know why this thread went on for so long, although it’s kinda funny in a way :joy:

(I wonder what would happen if I named my hyena Dennis  )

That’s a whole different can of worms right there. Funcom admins generally don’t do any proactive moderation of the servers. The only way this dude could get in trouble for their character name is if someone reported it via Zendesk, and I’m willing to bet that Funcom would ignore that report because there are actually no rules against it.

Which leads me to:

The outrage you’ve seen from some people most likely stems from the way Funcom has handled server moderation. I’m not gonna belabor the problems here, but if you’re interested, you can find plenty of reading on these forums. Start by searching for “reporting meta” and take it away from there

At any rate, people are really frustrated by uncertainty, inconsistency, and lack of transparency when it comes to the enforcement of the official server rules, and anyone who stirs that pot – even with best intentions – will inevitably get jumped

See, I can totally understand that. It’s to avoid shenanigans between players, not because of “intellectual property”.

Maybe Funcom should add that to the random list of crimes when you create a character? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Greetings Exiles,

If more clarifications about Official server guidelines are needed, please submit a ticket to our Help center.

The forum is not the correct venue for this as such discussions often lead to misleading and/or speculative information.

Thanks for understanding.
