To be fair, I started the game on PS4 so had to rent a gportal server for me and 3 other people. Believe this or not, I never had an issue with them and the server ran perfectly fine. I made the switch to PC for a couple reasons, one being the ability to use mods and so at that point, hosting my own server was a possibility so I did that purely to avoid the monthly fee, not because I was disappointed by gportal. I get the complaints about the funcom servers, but when it comes to those servers, the server quality itself is not what would keep me off of them (I’m not even convinced it’s gportal per se, but rather the load players put on them with their builds).
All have merits.
Single Player: no addtional resources required, but the game stops when you don’t play and friends have a tether distance when in co-op
Rental: No hardware to maintain or purchase, but monthly fee required
Dedi launcher on a local server: Must have the hardware but no monthly fee
Dedi Launcher on client machine: Already have the pc, free, but must have spare resources available to run the server and be on for anyone who wants to play with you or when you want to process material when not playing
There’s a reason all are options. No one is right/wrong for choosing any of the above.
Note, I realised I left off funcom servers… Freud might have something to say about it, but to each their own
