Not allowed to play online due to gold membership

So when I try to play online it tries to get me to purchase gold membership because my account shares gold membership with my brothers account but no matter what I do can’t play online unless I waste money on another gold membership

Has your brothers xbox live gold ran out? I share with my boyfriend and when the gold runs out on his account we have to go to his account and renew or buy the xbox live gold
