Thor was indeed the Norse god of Thunder. Son of Odin and weilder of Mjolnir (that much at least Marvel got right).
I had forgotten about Appolo’s connection to Troy. Now that I am reminded, I think I recall Oddyseus stealling a sacred stone from that city with the aid of Athena?
In all my life, I never made that connection between Troy and Apollo.
Thank you for that enlightenment.
I use to think Troy was a part of the Hitite empire?
I guess it was actually more of a vassal state.
Odysseus was responsible for the “Troyan horse”. It was Poseidon who was insulted from this action and that’s why his return to Ithaca was delayed for ten years, not to mention that it became much worse when Odysseus killed his son kyklops Polyphimus.
Odysseus used these materials from the broken ships to build the horse. Mykinians would never defeat Troy if Odysseus wouldn’t use his political, combat and technical skills. Agamemnon would never allow from the other hand to any “Ahaio” to return back defeated, he would use all his army to kill his own allies before he return back defeated. Odysseus was the king of a small island, Ithaca, he only allied Mykines just to save his island from the barbaric madness of Agamemnon. He even convinced Achilles to join this war just to have a strong ally if things went wrong. Odysseus had no reason neither benefit from this war, he just used his skills to end it and go back home. If you can say that Conan has a protype on Howard’s mind from Greek mythology, this would be definitely Odysseus.
Apollo send “Λοιμο” to the army of Mykines because Agamemnon defiled his temple and kept the priestess of his temple as slave, sex slave also. Her name was Χρυσηιδα and her father high priest Χρυσης begged for his daughter return in exchange of gold. Agamemnon denied so Apollon got upset (like i told you Apollon was very sensitive with with human weakness but fair also) and send the sickness to the Mykinian army.
The War of Troy is written from the winners…
The War of Troy is a story, that became legend and in the end myth!
But again from the winners…
But it has a huge teaching if you ask me. How mistaken religion power can be used and create untold massacre globally.
The sad part?
Religions can still do this…
It’s sad brother, really sad!
Ps. Forgive my alphabet mistakes, i didn’t use Google to translate Greek to English
I remember the story included Odysseus not wanting to go to the war. He pretended to be mad, ploughing the beach when the Mykines (Mycenean, as I was taught - but yours is more correct) came to collect him to answer the vow they had all made to stand together if anyone took Helen. One of the other princes took Telemachus (Odysseus’ son) and put him in the path of the plough, so Odysseus had to steer away and prove he was not mad, so then he had to go to war.
I remember he had to do many clever things during the story of the war (the stealing the stone was just one act among the many), including some clever trick to reveal Achilles, whose mother had disguised him as a girl. But it’s the story of the killing of Polyphimus that I always remember for the cleverness. In the version I was taught, Odysseus had conversations with the cyclopes before their final conflict (he and his crew being Polyphimus’ prisoners) and always insisted that his name was ‘nobody’ - so when the final conflict came, and Poliphemus was roaring in pain all the others were asking ‘who is blinding you?’ ‘who is killing you?’ and he kept answering that nobody was doing it, so they didn’t come and help…
Agamemnon, on the other hand, was one that there were many stories about his evil acts - even though the story was written by the winners. I had forgotten the defiling of Apollo’s temple and enslaving his priestess (though it does sound familiar now you mention it), but I remember some of his other acts like sacrificing his own daughter, and stealing a woman from Achilles (so Achilles refused to leave his tents, until Hector killed Patrocles thinking it was Achilles, and Achilles went out for revenge).
So many deaths and ten years of war (and another ten years for Odysseus to get home) and all because Aphrodite promised Helen to Paris. Which only happened because Hera, Aphrodite and Athena picked Paris to decide which of them should receive the Golden Apple. Which only happened because Eris made the Golden Apple to sow discord. Which only happened because someone forgot to invite her to a wedding… A butterfly flaps its wings and ten thousand miles away a hurrican destroys ships…
The myth or Homer .
The history is that Telemahus was 4 years old when Odysseus went to war so it was impossible to steal any princess . Then again the siege lasted about one and a half year but nowhere in the history is the most important explanation… How this army was fed, who was supporting this siege? The short answer was the islands of course so when Odysseus failed to return on Ithaca the island lords claimed the throne and Penelope of course. They could claim her because Telemahus was a minor he couldn’t be a king.
Another fact that Odysseus was missing 11 and a half years from his island was his dog Argos. This dog died in a phenomenal age for dogs life 20 years old, in the hands of his beloved boss while he returned to his home.
Achilles was dressed like a girl from his mother while he was a baby just to pass him in a sanctuary and bath him in the undying pool. The reason he had a weak point on his feet was because his mother was holding him from this spot, but that’s fairytale
He claimed but never gained…
Βρισηιδα was the second priestess.
She took asylum to Achilles tent. The story says that they fell in love too. Achilles was present on Χρυσής beg, he understood how the father of his beloved one would feel after all this time and when he returned to his tent, he lifted Βρισηιδα to his horse and deliver her to the Troyan gate with the promise that they will meet again.
He died trying to find her and protect her from the madness of the siege.
Agamemnon got really upset from his action and starter yelling at him reminding him who’s the king. This is the first reference of the sentence “μολων λαβε” that Leonidas will use 2 thousand years after against Xerxis.
Achilles got banned by Agamemnon from the war since he couldn’t face him on 1v1 battle in effort to humiliate him the most he could.
The funny thing with the ancient history of Ahaia is that in many cases has became bed time story, or entertainment story. Too many writings and too many opinions that in the end has became a little mess.
The encouraging thing however is that Ahaia was something like united states today. Every city was a country that cared only for their own civilization and literally envy and throw mud to other cities. Sycophancy was a sport back then.
They all agreed however to higher values and when it came to Achilles they all paid their respect.
Achilles has became the standard of the warrior on each city. His name united Ahaia you can say and each child dreamed to become Achilles.
The beautiful part is that this lasts until today, almost 5 thousands years after. I have a father and a son named after this name and i have a silly pride in my heart for it , i know i am silly brother so i beg your pardon for it.
But being brave, fair and proud is what a man should be after.
Ps. @Vahlok a thousand apologies for the derail, i beg you pardon as well
Yes. All that I studied of the Mycenean period is all myth (though I was aware that sometime archaeologists had found Troy). The Greek history that I studied was all later - Herodotus, Pericles and Athenian democracy, Thucydides and the Peloponessian War etc. It is good to get a more historical perspective on the things that I know only the stories about
I also apologise and will cease discussion of subjects only tangentially related. I hope, however, that the side discussion has been sufficiently interesting, certainly I have found it of interest.
@stelagel, @DanQuixote, @Talyna
There is nothing to apologize about because this topic has been very refreshing to read with all of your inputs. Far more refreshing than the bashing that’s been going on about this game.
