Ping is too high (when its not) error message when joining server

Every time I try and get into the game through steam’s auto retry/ “join the server as soon as a player slot is available” – when its my turn I get an error message stating that my ping exceeds the server maximum limit --> despite the fact that the ping shows as being somewhere in the 30’s or 40’s – so I end up waiting hours and hours to get into the game - can someone please advise wtf Im supposed to do to avoid this
