Pretty much this.

I’ve seen some pretty decent thralls (not top tier, but higher than the area in question) get taken down by a group of double digit health NPCs simply because they could roll out the hits nearly consistently. They would pose a threat to me if I couldn’t roll dodge or otherwise try to maneuver out of it.

The stunlock is the killer, and it does apply to NPCs as well, but frequently we operate solo with followers where NPCs operate in camps. They have homefield advantage more often than not.

I found one of the more difficult things to do is holding threat myself. Even without Incite activated, it can be tricky to hold agro on everything around you. I wouldn’t mind a bit of a taunt ability to get the attention on myself.

If I focus on being strong in melee, my authority will be low and thus my thralls weaker. Since I’m the greater threat, the focus of NPCs should be on me. That should be the trade off there.
