It could easily be something tangentially related to gates and not necessarily the presence of a gate itself. It’s just that removing the gate seems to either correct or bypass whatever is causing the problem.

Of course, this could also be an issue of multiple causes producing the same problem. Like if you’re car won’t start and you discover it’s because you’ve got a dead battery. But after you replace the battery, the car still won’t start because you’re also out of gas or something.
