Funcom-
I glad you updated the journey step system following Age of Sorcery: Chapter 3. It now feels more reminiscent of a skill tree featured in recent RPGs. However, I believe this change is somewhat unnecessary. There was nothing wrong with the original system. If anything, its listing of each journey step gave some players a better sense of direction. Also, how the completion of each step was accompanied by an animation, which depicted a trail of footprints, felt rewarding at times. I think it made Conan Exiles unique when compared with other survival games. Maybe in a future update (shortly following Age of War: Chapter 3) have the original journey step system return, while keeping the new system intact. Basically, implement a sever option where one can chose between the original journey step system or the current one in use.

I actually think it should be dialed up a bit.
Its current implementation is to provide a direction for players who don’t have thousands of hours in the game. But I think they could take it a step further and use the journey system to replace leveling entirely.
So instead of grinding mobs or foundations to get to 60, there isn’t levels at all. Instead you learn all knowledges normally gained from knowledge points via the journey system. Attribute points are also gained in this fashion.
Knowledges would be gained from exploration, crafting milestones, and even speaking to specific NPCs. While attributes are gained from progressively harder feats of strength. Some are gained from easy and even somewhat trivial encounters, but some of the last few points will require completing some of the dungeons and even some world bosses.
This would ensure that a strong character is actually the result of an experienced player who has an incentive and a guideline to follow while progressing their character.

The two journey systems accomplished very different things. The old one told a story, the new one is a tutorial. The game lacked any sort of tutorial, so the new journey system was a good addition, but at the cost of losing the story.
I do not think enabling the old system as a server option would be good, but bringing back the old system as a standard to exist in tandem with the new system (perhaps tweaked to remove redundancies), would be good. That said, I do not see the old system ever returning in any capacity.
I think it is far too late in the game’s life for such a drastic change to the core mechanics, even the changes they are already making, which are flipping the table on old mechanics, are not quite as massive as that and are not roundly received.

What I suggested would have a much smaller impact on the veteran playerbase than Age of Sorcery and Age of War did.

I doubt your view about the older system not returning to the game in any capacity. If anything, it’s possible that Funcom could consider re-implementing the old journey step system given enough player feedback.
