Reducing your server footprint

I was inspired by a good friend, a real-life friendship I’ve earned through the PvP brotherhood, to remain in the game and fix my holdings up. This Thread was neither lugubrious nor satirical, and in fact I’m sure my pal hasn’t even seen it.

After I hit 6,000 hours, I’ve devoted all my game time to digesting and moving man and materiel around the map. After 17 hours, I have two main bases, an Obelisk Transfer base and a (BIG) shell of a thrall base. I am down to two T3 temples on the map rather than 3.

I culled my absent clanmates, and killed dozens of thralls. Maybe 50 followers or so remain.

Anyone else have stories?

I wish, but it’s awesome to see these kinds of posts.

I reduced my footprint after I put on smaller shoes. :upside_down_face:

Look everybody, I consider myself a cruel and dickheaded person, but the last 20 hours of game time have been spent in partial tears and a lot of frustration. I have been furiously deconstructing base after base only to find hidden niche of goodies and memories. It’s hard, bitter work, unbuilding what you thought you were supposed to be doing.

You’re reducing your footprint on a public server so you don’t get admin wiped and temp banned?

I’m trying to be a good example, rather than quit like a bish. My servermate Volatus talked me off that path without even knowing it, just by being a badass.

We have unban sprawl. One main base wasnt that big, it was several out buildings up on rocks and purge proof. Thru naughty PVE players attacking our bases and killing of thralls. We built walls all the way around the smaller buildings. The place is huge now.

In set city we had a small base, and players built below up along side of us, and besides us. Just to purge the big kid in town,
We now have wall around all the places walls can go, and built an entire lower level for public use, with all the goodies a traveler would need.

Do want huge places its a matter of survival not domination.

I think if I ever came to the point where I thought my options were to “set an example” or “quit” - I would indeed quit - or at least take a nice long 6 month break - as the game would be messing with my head too much at that point. When I begin thinking that others care at all, or start imagining and assuming how others perceive me because of how I play the game (as of course opposed to chat interactions), then I know I’ve entered a potentially unhealthy fantasy of my own creation and it’s time to get out.

Just play within the rule-set and enjoy the game. And if your brain is bringing you to a position that is at odds with that then, yup, time to go.

I’ve repeatedly reduced and expanded my “footprint” but mostly only because I wanted to. I will often build outside the rules by creating large publicly accessible structures or mega-walls and funnels to test out purge defense tactics, but I delete them a week or two later as part of the fun. I certainly don’t think I’m setting any kind of example as I know only 10% of the players will even see it (if I’m building centrally according the spirit of the rules) and of those absolutely no one is going to consider it as an example to follow.

IMO, huge places are neither a matter of domination nor survival… They are most likely because the player likes to build big stuff and gets carried away in the zen of building. That’s how it is for me anyway.

In both PVP and PVE it’s just not smart to build big IMO and in my experience. I read a lot of players here who think otherwise but it seems to me their logic is flawed. They show a TRULY HUGE base being demolished by gods and bombs and then conclude they need to build even bigger to prevent that… or in PVE to prevent hackers from taking you down. Welp, duh, if your mega-base didn’t stop them why would think a super-ultimate-mega-base would - especially when that’s totally against the rules anyway? So building huge doesn’t help you survive nor dominate and reducing your footprint doesn’t set any kind of example for anyone.

The conclusion, yeah, just play within the rules and enjoy the game. Use what tactics and practices you like. And if you’re on a PVP server then accept that getting raided is part of Funcom’s vision for the game.

~=shrug=~

I don’t get this at all. On every server you’re either a heel or babyface, and long-term, patterns do emerge. If you don’t know or care how you’re perceived on a PvP server, you’re not going to understand why those two players keep bombing you relentlessly.

I have let various caches die. I am also looking at letting my alpha bases die as well and stay completely lowkey.

I wish we had the option to demolish a base that we own outside of the decay meter. That way it doesn’t take a week.

With the new dismantling system you can basically just walk around the perimeter and it falls into your pocket…

Sort of but I build in PVP and so most of my vertical stacks of foundations and anticlimb are connected to the mesh (so that it protects against blowing up the bottom one and it all crashes down). So its still one foundation at a time. However the treehouses…oh that is sooooo easy to move. Feel like a MASH unit.

You’re coming off like someone who knows very little about Official life.

Find me 2 contiguous walls that haven’t been damaged by exploratory fire.
