Let’s dissect this image a bit. This is from just north of the Mounds of the Dead. In the screenshot is an enemy, with the ‘glow’ people are calling… you can only tell there is an enemy present because they have a star metal weapon.
If I was not in creative mode, I would have been easily jumped by that enemy before I saw them.
What does this ‘glow’ actually achieve? Like I said earlier in the thread, it simulates visually (in a VIDEO game) the senses the game does NOT provide. Texture, Smell, Taste, Humidity, Air Pressure, Static, Balance, Spatial Awareness, etc. All these things people use in real life to navigate even moonless nights and dark rooms are missing when you just have a black screen.
I don’t know about you but I don’t suddenly lose those senses when it gets dark. You do lose the ability to discern objects and people from a even a short distance away. Which if you look in the screenshot above, that enemy could be in the same room in a building and you’d still be unable to see them sans the star metal weapon.
If I were to fight the cimmerian, yes I’d be able to see them in melee. Just as if you were in knife fighting range you’d be able to tell what your opponent is doing in that amount of proximity (as the scar on my leg can attest to).
All this ‘glow’ does is make it so you can see your character (your character should know what they are doing where their legs are going and what their arms are doing) as you don’t lose spatial awareness just because you can’t see. Blindness even doesn’t make it so you’re crippled to the point where you’re moving around randomly, darkness in varying levels won’t either. As well as the area they can interact with immediately. As you can still hear sounds, feel vibrations, feel the air move as someone moves around and other subconscious information that gives you some sense when something is happening in your immediate vicinity.
Could this be done a different way? Sure, but this is Conan Exiles and the focus is on killing and looting and conquering, not immersive story telling. It gets the job done.
