This is a server to test out a mod i’ve been working on that is a conan classic+ mod that makes comprehensive changes to the way the game currently is and attempts to bring it more in line with what it used to be and create a more longform progression that enhances all parts of the game while focusing on sandbox elements rather than themepark elements.
The reason I’ve made this mod is because I believe conan has gone from being a game with flaws to a game that doesn’t know what it even want’s to be.
For the last four years Funcom has made countless changes that at first might seem like good ideas they turn out to be completely undermining the fundamentals of the game.
At it’s core Conan is a survival crafting but changes have worked to make it into a sort of pseudo soulslike with optional crafting and building. one of the most egregious changes to the game has been the addition of regular loot drops and even guaranteed pickups that work to completely invalidate crafting, the best examples of this being Musashi’s blade at al merayah and the armor of sobek which can be obtained within the first 20 minutes of the game and outscale everything but the absolute best of the best armor. You might as well be playing in creative mode.
For a long time there’s been debates about the implementation of Legendary weapons, they used to be somewhat worthless because they were worse than dragonbone and star metal weapons, until suddenly they were made exceedingly powerful and only gated by having to be level 60 to open the boxes.
These legendary weapons also exist completely outside the crafting system, invalidating all weapons you can craft in the game. to add on theres an even greater issue now that they don’t require you to be level 60, meaning you can grab your trusty katana and sobeks armor, head over to dregs and stock up on legendary weapons.
With crafted weapons and armors now being useless thralls are also useless as a consequence, clearly this is something funcom realised so they cut down the thrall conversion time to literally 1/18th of what it used to be. Even base building is not worth anything aside from building a cozy home since you don’t do anything valuable with it either.
Raiding has also turned in to a meaningless activity that people really only do because they want to mess with another person, not because the other person has anything of value, because nothing has value. even obtaining the dragonpowder required to raid has become a low effort activity because you can just run into the well of skelos or al merayah and get lots of it.
in the current state of the game there is NOTHING that holds value, not your gathering, not your weapons, not your thralls, not your base. it has all been completely invalidated with the additions of dubious mechanics and changes.
What I’ve set out to do is to remedy these issues and make the efforts of the player feel like they’re worth something.
Starting with loot, mobs and chests will no longer provide high tier loot at reliable rates that undermine progression and crafting, non epic gear is somewhat easily obtained the way it used to be.
Boss drop legendary weapons have been returned to their former rare droprates, however you now recieve a “Worn” version which you will restore by bringing it to a blacksmith and repairing it with a new item called a Legendary weapon restoration kit, this is an item you craft. once you restore a legendary weapon by crafting it at the blacksmith you will recieve the bonuses of having it crafted by a thrall for extra damage/armor penetration making it better and worth more than it used to be.
You now need to repair a broken skeleton key to be able to open legendary chests that will now provide you with a weapon fragment that will let you craft all the legendaries that used to drop the legendary chests, these weapons also recieve thrall craft bonuses, making them more valuable and powerful than ever. these crafts also have some resource bottlenecks associated with them designed to provide a certain level of conflict, provide an endgame goal but also not flood the game with legendary weapons
Certain weapon tiers, such as the “ancient” weapon’s have been adjusted to actually be in line with level progress, meaning they’re not stronger than hardened steel.
Bearer pack supply materials have seen some changes, they will no longer provide massive amounts of steel bars and bear pelts.
As for armors, epic tier armor simply does not reliably drop and paddings no longer drop so you will have to actually craft it again.
crafting thralls with these changes are now very valuable again. in addition rare Tier 4 fighter and archer thralls are now buffed (Primarily in terms of HP) and are now very much worth getting and some are thrall perks are significantly buffed. certain guaranteed tier 4 spawns such as the cimmerian berserker, freya and lian are now a tier 3 thralls. with this the thrall conversion time has been restored to what it used to be, you will now want to get taskmasters.
Gothrad the breaker is now Gothrad the broken because he’s now a guaranteed t1 spawn instead of a guaranteed t4 spawn.
The gear equipped by some lower tier thralls has been changed, Tier 1 and 2 thralls at the mound of the dead now use ancient weapons rather than star metal so they’re less likely to be mass farmed for star metal. Black hand thralls that used ancient weapons (pike and bow) have been changed to more appropriate weapon tiers.
most Greater pet’s have been buffed, they’re now a lot more viable than they used to be.
Horses and sorcery are disabled for now
Things that undermine resource gathering and base building are gone. You also won’t be able to aquire dragonpowder without farming for it, seeing as players progression is now valuable and more effort again it should not be overly easy to take away from that progress and effort. Sandstone buildings have seen some buffs to make it less worth raiding early game players.
These are the thing’s i’ve focused on and fixed for now, there are however some things I’d like to focus on later:
-
rebalance the perk system, moving the game away from being forced into playing with most of your attributes in agility.
-
adding very long term progression for very hard to obtain weapons and armours.
-
make temperature more of a thing again, not overbearing but at least matter a bit more.
-
make crafting thralls work the way they used to, thralls used to give you reduced cost benefits depending on their tier, making them much more worthwhile before tier 4. this is currently tied to improved and specialised crafting benches and while cool initially, I do believe it was a change that negatively effected the game.
-
Stamina, hyper armor and i-frame changes to tidy up the combat.
