Should We Be Worried?

(This is not to be a political topic, please stay on the topic of funcom games and TenCent)

Trump’s WeChat ban could touch everything from Spotify to League of Legends (TenCent)

When I hear of this was 45 days to be real, so about now it’s about 35? Days out. If it does goes active, I can just imagine the uproar, I guess we have to wait and see.

“Should we be worried?” That depends. Do you live in the United States? If you don’t, then you have nothing to worry about when it comes to Trump’s Tencent Tantrum.

If you do live in the United States, then you have to ask yourself the following question: do you really think that any law enforcement agency is going to go after you for playing a Funcom game? And also, a followup question: do you really think that the Trump Administration will actually put in place some kind of technological implementation of his executive order, something along the lines of the Great Firewall?

If your answer to either of those questions is “yes”, then you should be worried about a lot more than your access to Conan Exiles.

I’m just worried how its going to affect funcom and other game studios, like if this may delay or even cancel the map we’re supposed to get for conan. I haven’t heard of anything like that happening but thats the first thing I thought of.

No, you do not have anything to worry about. The news articles are just fear-mongering and writing articles far longer than the actual executive order itself because it gets them clicks.

10c have 40% of Epic Games shares according to many sites out there. 10c have 100% shares of the old Funcom and allegedly grabbed those shares because Funcom hold the rights to develop the Dune game which coincides with the movie remake (for 2022 release???) and 10c feel that that will be a huge cash-moo. It would be surprising if 10c games were affected by political influence, but if that did happen, players will just move/stay according to their preferences?

Conan Exiles has lasted way longer than I suspect it was expected to. I personally love the current content and am only sorry that the post-patch ping lags have caused so many players to stop playing the game (based on comments/actions from players on my servers) - it has/will not stop(ped) me playing on my main server.

I don’t see international players leaving the other 10c-owned games (fortnight, PUBG, check PCgamer’s articles for more) so let’s wait and see. I do suspect that there may be a downturn in purchases of any next DLCs for Conan and, depending on how the rumoured additional map content becomes available, whether that will sell well. who knows.

Funcom staff are on their Summer break so things are on hold for now. If past years are anything to go on, we should see new stuff/announcements soon after they get back so watch this space I guess…

And you are on trumps team and know all this for a fact. No, none of us do.

No, I just bothered to take the time to actually read the order.

It’s a tantrum disguised under the perfectly valid concern that you describe and that I agree with. What makes this Executive Order a tantrum is the motivation behind it and the context surrounding it.

Games are not being banned just social media apps at this point. Tik Tok, Wechat, and music’ly so far are the only issue. This is due to the possibility of the companies selling our personal info to the Chinese government. It is possible after all China is the capital of hackers, gold sellers, and gold farmers.

According to forum rules it isn’t. This forum is for game discussion.

Its not about politics perse. As far as I know and read in our newspaper this week, the US goverment is thinking about not only going after wechat and tiktok transactions but also all transactions Tencent does.

If this is correct and goes through, then it will hit also the gaming sector. You wouldn´t be able to purchase any product from Tencent anymore, including Conan Exiles.

Its not all about internet security and datamining. China is doing business in almost every country in the world, but companies outside China are rarely allowed to do business in China this includes Us companies like Apple and Google. Its about setting some ground rules for fair international trading. This also has importance too the gaming industry and E-Sports. We are talking about a multi billion dollar industry.

No, it’s about another cold war with different players. Until other countries wake up and understand just what is at stake, the balance of power may already be lost. I live in the US and am by no means a fan of the current administration but the threat is real. I am not over reacting.
