Sold a thrall and buyer left her behind

Sold my first thrall. 200g not bad. However, whoever bought her left her behind in the cage. I had to remove the cage, but their thrall is now just standing there, in my base area, taking up space.

Not sure if this works but perhaps you can place a pvp flag near and kill this thrall with pvp?

That’s customer service! Didn’t pick up your order in time? We’ll burn it!

No, seriously, just message the player to pick the thrall up or wait some days until he or she noticed that he or she forgot something.

It could stand there forever ((( If you play on a private server try to find Admin and ask to destroy a stray Thrall. If this is an official PVE server, then the only way to get rid of someone else’s Thrall is to lure some mob to kill him.

I have same problem on my playstation server’s. Guess it is from players with out enough Authority. Can not tell who they belong to @AZBarbarian

This is one of those situations that makes me wonder: did nobody on the design team consider this scenario?

As things work today, most of the possible solutions seem either complicated or unreliable. If a purchased thrall remains near the trading cage for too long, what happens? Does it despawn? Return to the cage? Spawn at the buyer’s base (kind of like Freya does)? None of those solutions feels particularly robust.

But honestly, I think there’s a much cleaner solution that would solve this entire class of problems.

Simply turn the purchased thrall back into an inventory item.

To me, that seems like the ideal solution. It’s intuitive, resistant to exploits, and avoids a lot of edge cases.

“But what if I want to sell a thrall with armor, weapons, and items equipped?”

That’s actually easy to solve.

The thrall itself would become an inventory item, while everything equipped or stored on that thrall would be bundled into a package and transferred to the buyer at the same time. Conan already has a native pack/container system, so the underlying mechanics already exist.

What about the thrall’s level and perks?

Personally, I think that’s a reasonable trade-off. The thrall could simply be reset to level 0, with its perk RNG rerolled when it’s converted back into an inventory item and claimed by the new owner.

This approach would have several advantages:

  1. It would finally introduce a way to convert a placed thrall back into an inventory item. With today’s follower limits, that’s a quality-of-life feature players have been asking for for a long time.

  2. The same mechanic could be reused for Siege cages and tribe cages.

  3. It would eliminate an entire category of problems involving misplaced, forgotten, or inaccessible thralls.

To me, this feels much simpler than trying to handle every possible world-state after a sale. Sometimes the cleanest solution is to remove the world interaction entirely and let the inventory system handle the transfer.

And reset level, perks, and stats increase percentages? No, that won’t do. They are not selling a pig in a poke, but a trained and more or less good Thrall. I suggest another mehanics: If any companion is standing on guard in other player’s landclaim then it has to be telepoorted into his owner’s landclaim after next server restart. Maybe naked and with empty inventory as if it was «saved».

Agreed.

For a time you could KO thralls from other clans/players, throw them on the wheel, then when you placed them from inventory they spawned with all the gear they had on them, can’t quite recall if they were leveled though. Was patched a long long time ago. There are probably still inventories all over that have stores of thralls like this. The last time I saw this was about 3 years ago, however. (Also, would be an interesting addition to PVP, you’d have to be more careful about how you raid in order to get their thralls).

Anyway what I am saying is that the package is a suggestion but there are already pre-existing mechanisms in game that may be easier for the devs to implement if they ever did consider going this route.

It bugs me quite a bit that we’re being pushed to have all these already-in-the-world thralls… the cages on both maps, hiring at taverns, rescuing at purges and now with the thrall stand. Even WOPs’ reduced breaking time. I won’t get much into it but suffice it to say that it is another loss for survival.

I had a Thrall standing in my pub like that, and I couldn’t get rid of him for almost three weeks before he disappeared (probably due to decay).
Besides, in this case, you don’t even know whose thrall it is!

A mechanism that would teleport these stray thralls back to the player’s territory after a server restart would solve a lot of problems—everyone has come across a thrall near the cage, and just remember the legions of bartenders that couldn’t be killed.

I can’t tell whose thrall it is. It is also possible someone does this on purpose because they are a DB.

Me too. One Thrall appeared on my landclaim maybe after scouting and another spawned just inside my foundation (I found him when I tried to upgrade T1 foundation to T3), so I had to build around those two dudes. They stayed there forever until I left this official server. Looks like Thrall decay was off or bugged because I saw some groups of Thralls on the beach: bases decayed and they stayed and no mobs around to kill them. It’ VERY annoying.

I feel for you because there is no way to know the owner.

As far as suggestions for fix? Simple. Thralls can only be placed on claimed land and when obtaining a thrall (from cages) in the wild or if land claim is go due to destruction or decay, the default is your respawn point.
If people have issues with scouting timers being too short for dungeon crawls etc. make the timer longer. For game sanity there is no good reason for thralls not be linked to your base. Far too many times I see good base spots taken up by thralls of some other player that either tried to stake claim via thrall or forgot a thrall in an old base.

There’s also an existing mechanic that could serve as a good foundation: server transfers.

When you transfer a character between servers, all of your followers remain in your Followers list and can be deployed into the world at any time, with no loss of level, gear, or perks.

I didn’t initially suggest that approach because those followers still count toward the player’s follower cap while they’re stored in the list. Even so, I think it’s a strong starting point.

To build on it, I’d add a new option in the Followers menu that lets players convert an undeployed follower into an inventory item.

Think of it as something similar to Break Bond, except instead of deleting the follower, it packs them into an inventory item. As a trade-off, the follower would be reset to level 0 and have their perks rerolled.

To make the system even more complete, I’d keep the idea of generating a separate item bundle containing everything the follower was carrying.

Or, if exploit prevention is a concern, the item bundle could only be created if the player is physically near the follower and chooses Return to Inventory from that follower’s interaction menu. That would prevent players from remotely packing fully equipped followers while still providing a much cleaner and safer system overall.
