No, it’s not a bit much when this stupid fad is spreading through most games. One character ugly now and again is fine. In certain games, it fits perfectly. But turning established characters ugly to appease a fringe of weird players is just wrong.
Most people don’t want to play “the girl next door”. They want to escape the harshness of reality by playing archetypal heros. Most players escape the limitations of real life through gaming and they don’t give a frak about bringing their real life challenges along with them.
Most players like real beauty like this:
Or like this
You don’t need a character looking like a manga drawing, fhs, unless we’re playing JRPGS.
But we surely don’t want

And that’s where we are headed for reasons that go well beyond gaming.
Do you know why an ugly character, poorly written, specifically conceived to pass “the message” ruins an entire game, even if the rest is good (although usually it isn’t)? Immersion. You can’t identify with a type of character you don’t like, physically, and that comes often ideologically loaded with no reason whatsoever. That’s all it takes to ruin a game.
Women can be strong without looking masculine. The above examples are from soldiers and authorities. I practiced combat sports for a long time and met a few hotties who were as strong as they come. They weren’t flat or ugly. They weren’t fat either, as your health and physical prowess can’t keep up with such body types. I don’t want a hero that will be gasping for air after climbing a few stairs or jumping over an obstacle. I don’t want a female hero that takes after her father. Why? Because that doesn’t feel attractive and it has nothing to do with physical abilities, since a lot of athletes have stunning bodies, perfect hourglasses. And I won’t pretend I ignore the end goal which is much kore than simply making heros look like us.
