I launch Conan Exiles. Plan to play a few hours.

Oh… the server has a ping over 200… can’t log in. OK, I’ll wait 5 mins and refresh… that usually fixes it.

Nope. Still over 200. OK, annoyed… but wait another 5 mins. NOW, I can get in.

Log in… I am rubberbanding in place. Can’t move. OK…log out and back in. LOL ping over 200 again. WAIT ANOTHER FIVE MINUTES TO LOG IN AGAIN.

Get back in… cool I can move now! That took 15 mins but finally able to play!
Head to Sepamaru. Hey cool, a named thrall! Arm myself and my named lvl 9 thrall with truncheons to start whacking some heads. Thrall immediately disappears under ground. Other NPCs murder it in under a minute since it’s not attacking…not doing anything. Refuses to move when I tell it to because…underground.

Really annoyed… and thrall is still under ground. LOG OUT AND BACK IN to get the gear off the corpse. Thank Chutulu no over 200+ ping this time.

Super annoyed, but get my back up level 0 thrall and gear her. Find a rhino outside my base and attack it to get her some xp. She immediately goes under ground, and gets murdered… That’s TWO thralls dead from the same server issue. I can do nothing but watch them die.

Log out in total disgust. Seriously wondering why I play this game that constantly runs like trash.

The servers are terrible. Constant lag from server not being able to handle big bases…in a game that is all about building bases. Constant issues such as thralls going underground/disappearing/not attacking/etc. Ping issues.

I am so tired of these daily issues from a game that I love, causing me so much stress and frustration. No other game infuriates me like this…

I am considering never playing this game again… and that makes me sad. I have bought all the DLCs. Made quite a few purchases on the shop. And now, I wonder why I spent so much money on a game that seems to be run like it’s a total afterthought.

If you don’t mind a bit of advice from someone who left this game behind: don’t fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy.

You spent that much money on the game because it was fun. If it isn’t fun anymore, it’s okay to stop playing it and go play something else.

Try other games for a while, maybe you’ll have fun with them. Maybe after a while, you’ll want to come back to Conan Exiles. Maybe you won’t. Either way, it’s fine to move on.

Think of it as spending money on clothes. Eventually even your favorite T-shirt might fade or get torn, and you end up recycling it. Despite that, you enjoyed wearing it and don’t regret having bought it.

This is very good advice… I think I will be following it moving forward.

I did mention the money spent to show that I truly love this game, and if it wasn’t for the server issues, and the game just running like absolute poo most of the time, I would be playing for months and years to come.

I love the game, and I hate that it gets ruined (at least for me) by terrible management.

That’s not the game it’s the server.

But I agree with Codemage, I haven’t quit the game, but am not playing it. If ch4 doesn’t make me happy, well when I’m done with Enshrouded there is Nightingale, and maybe Soulmask or light no fire will be out after that.

:sob:
No!!! mine!!!

Edit: also @jwilliam87 Deacon is right, most of that boils down to a poorly running low quality server. If you play on PC and PvE, I do have a fairly empty UK-hosted server that’s of pretty good quality and has my QoL mods running, gameplay is mainly vanilla (no weird total conversion or quests and custom NPCs and stuff, just basic conan) and slow progression (0.2x XP)
I don’t usually advertise it much, it’s just there in my modding discord in case someone wants to join :man_shrugging: but if your ping is fine and you want to play on it, have at it  I guarantee it’ll run better than officials.

I appreciate the sentiment here, but the reason so many of us are furious and not content to just move on is because there’s no good reason for the game to be so bad. It’s not like I played the game and had enough of it, time to move on… the game changed under my feet, it is constantly changing, and the change is not being directed by people with any sensibility or competence so the game just turns to trash.

All of the severe server problems that are happening right now were easy to predict as soon as Age of Sorcery was released. And yet Funcom did it anyway. They mercilessly persist in ruining a game with so much potential.

I’ve had a lot of good times in Conan, sure, I did get my money’s worth, but I would happily pay more money for a game that wasn’t a buggy dumpster fire with an overpriced cash shop. Sadly Funcom pursues the cash shop whales and gamers get left SOL.

There’s no reason that you or I would find good. There are plenty of reasons that Funcent deems are good enough, and plenty of paying customers to prove them right.

Welcome to the “live service games”. They’re the latest stage of late stage capitalism in video games, and the current pinnacle of enshittification of the industry we used to love so much. Remember my T-shirt metaphor above? Imagine if the T-shirt companies could somehow implement planned obsolescence bullshіt that some other companies use. That’s what we have with video games now.

And that’s all the more reason to move on to a different game and stop supporting parasitic studios and publishers, like Funcent. There are reasons to hope that the industry might be about to undergo a shift away from this extreme, but for that to happen, we-the-consumers need to keep putting our money into games that don’t fit the parasitic model, like Baldur’s Gate 3.

Of course they do. You wanna know why? Because gamers who continue to cling to bad games are a tiny, unprofitable minority.

The irony here is that Conan Exiles is far from the worst offender when it comes to “live service” practices. In the video I linked above, you can see the slimiest examples of that particular cesspool. Funcent knows they can’t compete with them, so instead they carved out a niche for themselves.

Conan Exiles was a niche game to begin with, and they took it to a niche live service game by preserving its niche appeal but making everything else blander, more generic, and easier. It has a unique setting and some eye-catching mechanics, but if you scratch that surface, you’ll find the gruel from Matrix. Sooner or later, you’ll realize that it doesn’t have “everything the body needs” and move on to something that has some actual taste.

Or you can keep complaining on the forums, but they’re not listening to you. Shouting louder or longer won’t make them. Spending money or refusing to spend money won’t make them, either, because Conan Exiles is only one of the games Funcom is working on and Funcom is only one of the cogs in Tencent’s money-making machine.

Yeah, it sucks that they took the game we enjoyed and changed it to something they can milk for ever-dwindling cash until they put it out of its misery. Go ahead and grieve for it. I know I did. Just don’t get forever stuck in the second of the five stages of grief.

Baldur’s Gate 3. Sold like hot pancakes.
Stellar Blade (PS5 exclusive in pre order stage), selling like there’s no tomorrow.

Live service could be good. It adds replayability. But greed… always greed.

Depends on when build mode is on. On officials, it is practically always on, fun.

I understand your frustration. Poor latency or framerate is a big disappointment for me when playing games too. A good online play experience in Conan Exiles does require that you have a pretty strong connection to the server you’re connecting to. Are you experiencing this latency with any server your choose?

Latency is not the issue. Drunken coding is the issue. The game AI is insane and dysfunctional on a server running on the LAN over gigabit ethernet when the server resource utilization is under 10%.

Yes, the issue is with any Conan Exiles server I choose, but it can differ on severity depending on the server, as well as the day and time I attempt to play. When I am having issues, most usually I hear from others on the server saying they also are having similar issues as well.

I do not have issues of this magnitude on any other game I play, since I do pay for high speed internet.
