Age of Conan failed because it was never finished. Like in that video, the 1-20 game was actually pretty damn good, and it is the sole reason I’ll recommend the game to people looking for a quick little story to play through. Once you’re done with Tortage, the whole game changes.
AoC’s underlying systems are actually quite good as well. The combat is engaging, even though it is still technically a Tab-Target MMORPG like Everquest, World of Warcraft, and Final Fantasy XIV, it still has a bit more nuance to it that feels a bit more actiony. Which for the time was a brand new experience since action MMOs weren’t exactly a thing yet. Even now its still quite fun to kill stuff in that game.
The major issue is the content slides off in quality massively after you leave the starter area. While every NPC is voiced in Tortage, very few and I mean VERY FEW, like maybe 1% if not less) are voiced. Giving a very empty feeling compared to the starter area. Now, I’m not going to say you NEED fully voiced NPCs in a game. But when you set the stage of everything being voiced in the beginning, it feels off in the later stages.
The tasks and quests you need to do in areas outside of Tortage also fill a bit all over the place. While modern MMORPGs (and even AoC’s contemporaries) organize them into hubs, AoC did not outside of Tortage. The tasks also do not tie into a central plot of the zone you are doing them in. They’re just kind of random stuff the NPCs send you on randomly and arbitrarily.
The game was unfortunately pushed out far too early. And while bugs and such could easily be fixed, and they roughly were to an extent. I don’t remember there being any thing past your normal multiplayer shenanigans that you normally see in MMORPGs here and there. Nothing extremely gamebreaking. And definitely less than some of the industry big horses like WoW and FFXIV. But you can’t fix the base line content.
Well… you can, if you pull a multimillion dollar FFXIV 2.0 A Realm Reborn style fix. Which was something Funcom wasn’t going to be able to do in 2008. AoC’s failing was it was overly ambitious and had systems that never got realized (until Conan Exiles), and the content was never and will never got finished.
Conan Exiles has the exact opposite of that problem. The content is all here, the content is fine. But the systems that interact with it are haphazard and constantly going through tweaking. Which isn’t the result of the game being rushed out too early. But of an unrealized vision that is unfortunately coming out in piecemeal.
When the Age and Chapter system was announced and with Age of Sorcery, we kind of thought that it mean chunks of content being added to spice things up. With Sorcery being a one time thing that would change (or rather add in a cut system) a certain aspect of the game. We didn’t exactly expect that each Age would have a major impact on the systems of the game itself.
From what I understand of the feedback given by the community, focus groups, and other things. We’re likely not done with Age of War with the systems changes. The rollercoaster is going to keep going for another while yet. No idea if its going to be a good ride or not. Chapter 2 is really going to set the pace however, for good or bad has yet to be seen. Though we’ll get a sneak peek on the upcoming livestream.
