Thrall Disappeared

I had a Kushite Archer II thrall I converted from my wheel. I leveled him up some, upgraded his armor and weapons, and I died later last night while out on a run with him. I was tired anyway and went to bed - he was scouting. Thinking he would be home this morning like other Thralls have before, I logged in but he’s not there. He’s no longer in my follower list either, so I can’t track him. I’ve restarted the game and he’s still not back at his guard position. He’s not at the location I died last night either. I’m not sure how to find him. Any tips?

Odd that he did not RETURN HOME through the normal return cycle.

What server are you playing on? Are you making use of any mods?

Typically - if the thrall is no longer in the Followers tab - you can usually count on them being gone gone. If you are running with some sort of mod - that may be affecting the usual thrall return gameplay. I cannot really think of any other reason why he might be missing.

You should check your Event Log, also. Dial proximity up to max, and set the days to the last time you had the Kushite Archer II. If something did happen to your follower - it will normally be detailed there.

I am playing on a private pve server.

The mods I use are Armor and Weapon Stats in Bench - AWS v3., Exile Architect, Emberlight 3.6.3, Nemedian Building Set Expansion 1.2, and Greater Camera Distance.

Thanks to your tip to check the Event Log (had no idea what that was till now), I found out he was killed by an NPC. I didn’t know they could be killed. They typically get knocked down and I have to revive them. Any previous Thrall out scouting when I’ve died has returned home. At least now I know they can actually die and adjust how I play.

So - thralls are a little interesting in how they work.

Lets say I have Darfari Archer I with me, and I was careless and low on HPs when I walked up on a pack of hyenas. The first one lunges at me, and kills me. Normal kill screen happens, and the last thing I saw was the pack going next after Darfari Archer I.

Next up - the game server will “unload” that “chunk,” or that area/region of the map. When an area of the map is unloaded, the game server writes everything that was active there presumably to disk or DB, and then removes all of those 1s and 0s from it’s active, RAM memory. Because there is no player character in the area, there is no need to actually compute what happens at that spot.

The next time we would “resume” my Darfari Archer I versus hyena pack would be the next time a player character wanders into that region or chunk. When the player character approaches, the server starts pulling recorded details about the last known state in that area, and then performs a reconciliation there. That’s essentially how your furnace stuffed full of ironstone works. Same premise.

So - if I am the player character to return to that spot first - I would likely see the hyenas RE-AGGRO Darfari Archer I, and start nipping at her. They might DNBO her. Darfari Archer Is don’t have a lot of hit points. But if I grab my stuff and dispatch the hyenas, I am there to revive her from DNBO.

Now… if I were to simply log off after that (I have something IRL to tend to) without first going to see the outcome of Darfari Archer I, someone else may come through that area. In which case, she might then be DNBO’d. The operation of DNBO is that the thrall WILL BLEED OUT and DIE if they aren’t tended to by you (or someone in your clan).

So, the player character in the area would see Darfari Archer I go down on her knee, and they would see her begin to bleed out. They might kill the hyenas, and move on. But if enough time elapses… the next person to come through that spot - the game server will load up details from memory, and Darfari Archer I will accrue bleed out time from the last time the chunk was in active memory. And that will kill her.

Hopefully understanding how the game servers work when player characters aren’t present will help you going forward.

Do we know if the DBNO timer continues when there is no one in render range?
Say someone comes upon that downed Darfari lass, but quickly continues on their way, would the system then snapshot and store her bleeding out progress for the next arrival?

I believe that it works just as the furnace does.

When someone pulls up, server loads the object. Last known state, subtract the elapsed time, render the difference. If she’s not had enough time to bleed out yet, she would have whatever portion of her bleed out HPs left.

Same with the furnaces. Last known state, apply the forged iron bars allowable by the elapsed time, render the sum.
