Trimming official servers

Greetings, Exiles!

Conan Exiles had a year of solid growth in 2021, and with what’s on the horizon we’re very excited about 2022 too! However, before we get to all that exciting new stuff, we have some house cleaning to do.

TLDR: we need to reduce the number of official PC and PlayStation servers.

Server merges list

Scheduled server closures/merges are listed on this page. Servers listed here will have an in-game notification about the closure/merge.
We will update here as we complete the list for each region so please keep an eye on it.

The goal with the official servers is to provide easy access to exciting gameplay in Conan Exiles through meeting and interacting with other players, whether there is PvP or more friendly encounters. On these servers, travelling across the Exiled Lands or the Isle of Siptah should include encounters with other players and their creations, whether a massive fortress or our beloved default 2x2 hut near the river.

Both with early access in 2017 and when Conan Exiles launched back in 2018 official servers filled to the brim. Then players found their preferred play hours, and server population stabilized at a healthy level. The same happened with Isle of Siptah servers when the expansion launched last year.

But official servers have their limitations. We have more than a thousand of them across the different platforms, regions, modes, and now maps. To keep this manageable we run all of them with default settings. Many players seek a different experience with regards to gathering and XP rates, purges, player limits, et al., and of course – on PC – one or more of the amazing mods the community has created.

Over the years, and even over the few months since Isle of Siptah launched, we have seen a continuous shift toward player-run servers and solo/co-op play. While activity in the game is higher than ever (outside of those crazy release months), several official servers see few players online during any given week.Less than a handful players on a server doesn’t provide the experience they were created for, especially when a server is essentially someone’s solo game. Hence why we will consolidate onto fewer servers.

How does it work?

Perhaps most importantly, we will not just shut off the power to servers and leave it at that. When a server is shut down, we will transfer all characters – active or not – to another server along with everything in their inventory. This transfer is not subject to the “no encumbrance” rule which applies to free transfers. However, transferred characters log in at the starting area so bring something to help you carry!

No constructions will be transferred. We realize this is not optimal. The main concern is that there can be a building in the same spot on the destination server already – especially on the popular PvP server base spots. Another is that this would complicate the database merge operation significantly.

Players on a server which is closing will be notified ahead of time through Message of the Day, and we will also provide a list of servers and dates here as they are decided on.

Please note: servers scheduled for closure will no longer allow character creation or incoming character transfers, this to avoid additional players taking up residence and being affected by the closures.

How many servers?

Having looked at the current player activity trends and making projections for that exciting new stuff to come later this year, we aim to close about one third of official servers.

This is not distributed evenly across platform, region, mode, and map, however. Thanks to the success of Conan Exiles on Game Pass, Xbox servers are well populated, and we will only close a few Xbox servers that were opened in the wrong region last summer. Thus, this almost exclusively affects PC and PlayStation servers.

Exact numbers for each of the combinations of platform, region, mode, and map varies greatly, and will be available once we share the servers and dates.

How are the servers decided?

  • Characters from a closed server will be merged to another server in the same location. For example, someone connecting to a server on the US east coast will not have to suddenly connect to one on the west coast.
  • Goal is to impact as few players as possible, so low population throughout January 2022 is the primary factor. Both average and peak population is considered, with most weight on the former.
  • Among low populated servers, we put some weight on the number of structures on the server.
  • Destination servers for the character merge are chosen based on population, with the aim of increasing average population across the board and not creating login queues.

What about the future?

The shift toward private servers and games and a more customized game experiences is expected to continue. But we also expect Conan Exiles to continue to grow. How exactly that will pan out over the next year and beyond is hard to predict.

It’s possible we will do more closures in the future. It’s also entirely possible we will need to open new servers! This we will have to come back to sometime after that exciting stuff we can’t say more about just yet.

Does this sound like we might be lucky and they open some officials with different settings in the future? (Like only weekend raid or only 2 hours raid time for example)

That would literally be a dream come true after so many years lmao

Great news. Id love to also see a few official servers with a full monthly wipe. Maybe dbl xp and harvest.

Lots of fun competition for harvest and base spots etc. after wipe.

What about placed thralls? If server A is being closed and player being moved to server B, what happens to all of the players thralls.

Also a building limit is needed and some more guidelines about the building limit rules . I know people who got banned for having only 6000 building pieces on the map . Reporting your enemy is the new meta . Cant beat them , just report them

So, are clans being split up if their server is closed? There are 3 of us currently in our clan who actively play. My wife and I are 2 of the 3. If our server draws the short straw and we get sent to different servers, one of us will have to transfer. Doesn’t that mean we’ll lose some of our crap that we don’t want to lose?

They will be wiped along with the buildings. Only what is in player`s inventory will be transferred.

Thank you for asking this b3l14l.

Clans from the servers getting merged (into another server) will be automatically be disbanded and not moved.
Yes, anything that is not in your inventory (building pieces, thralls, pets, items, etc) will be lost.

Are you going to shorten the transfer timer atleast? So we can transfer crafting thralls and ressources to an other server? Because im sure one of my server is getting closed.

And how will that work if i’ve already got a char on one server and you force transfer my other char on that server? Probably low chance for that, but still …

we will also provide a list of servers and dates here as they are decided on

So when can we expect this? One week or one month prior to servers getting closed?

I think the question here was whether the members of the disbanded clan will all get moved to the same destination server? Will existing clans get shattered across multiple destination servers?

I suspect the answer is ‘es’ since the action is to merge databases, so I presume the population of defunct serverA will all end up at destination serverB (but that is just conjecture on my part)

I’m a bit torn up about this news.

I think one of the primary reasons for people to go to player-run servers and solo/co-op play is a lack of new content. - Don’t get angry, just hear me out. - There was a huge content drought during the development and post-development of Siptah. But recently I think things have started taking a turn for the better. The introduction of the seathed weapns and the thrall emotes made official servers a lot more attractive.Yes, there’s still a lot missing, but it was moving into the right direction. I was starting to get the feeling that the game was being polished and that these new additions to the game made the official servers much more attractive. So I’m all the more surprised that you guys decided to start shutting down official servers at this very moment.

But I have to be honest - I’ve been doing less and less on official servers myself. If I look at the amount of work I have to put into making a cool looking base - especially with crafting hardened bricks etc - I honestly don’t feel it’s worth the bother, especially considering that you lose everything if you don’t log in for 7 days. On top of that I still go to the Exiled Lands if I want thralls because decent worker thralls on Siptah are just too hard to find. At the same time I found that constantly travelling between servers to get thralls was too much of a bother too, so I ended up doing solo-play.

There’s one more aspect which I think should be considered: PvP benefits from crowded servers, while most PvE players are looking for that nice spot near a lake, not too close to anyone elses base. So I hope you will take that into consideration during the trimming.

If I can make a final suggestion: if you want to make official servers more interesting, take out hardened bricks entirely. Making bricks is more than enough work and it still takes more time than building with black ice. Also: Siptah needs a Sepermeru or a place where you can easily get T4 workers. I think the Camp of Castaways would be perfect for this, since it would also focus some of the player activity back up north instread of everyone building in the south.

In conclusion I think that making the base game better will be better for the game as a whole than trimming servers … but that’s what I think.

P.S. since you are guys are polishing the game, is there any chance of being able to turn off combat music? pretty please

good luck in this new challenge and this need for adjustment :vulcan_salute:

Unless you personally transfer beforehand, they will transfer all characters from one server to another. So in essence the entire clan will be transferred as well to the same server if no one moved prior to the closing of the server.

Those who prepare, will not lose too much. Its amazing how much you can body vault. Plus you can collect your base pretty easily with the pickup option now. Main loss is thralls and pets.

Those who been offline for a long time… no gain or loss anyway since their bases/thralls would have decayed.

Server reduction is probably a good thing since people have mentioned “dead” servers for a long while.

Added note, active clan can pull their resources of inventory slots to maximize the transfer. Or contact clan members who are inactive to help during that one short period of time.

Is Funcom planning mass server shut downs? ah yes the time I was berated for suggesting such a thing anything to say now @codemage ?

Yeah I was telling my old clan this early last year as well…they didn’t take to that well. But Im glad to see it happening…of course the main issue here was I was consolidating various servers into one storage server…on a low pop server…sigh

General question/confirmation…if your base inventory exceeds to maximum amount that a maxed encumbrance can carry, this move will still allow you to take all of your inventory or is it limited to what the system allows in terms of max number of stacks of character inventory?

Well only what to say, if i will be switched away from players i like to play with morons … and if good players will be taken away by this stuff, conan exile devs from one of best game devs in my eyes will drop under PUBG devs that ruined game by increasing system req after years so players cant ask refund… ( i hate pubg devs to be honest…) it took me like 2 years to find friendly mostly server with players where only 1 is griefer and if this update takes me away from those nice players well yes… :C

Hello Ignasi,

Thanks to provide the list of the servers that will be closed, then we can transfert to an other server before the closing

Yes. All players from server A will be merged into server B.
We will have more details about this once we have the server merges list ready. Keep an eye out for that.

List does not exist yet, data is being reviewed to make those decisions. There may or may not be a published list, but impacted servers will get notification via Server Message of the Day. Meaning players who are actively logging in will see the notice with lead time to prep for transfer/shut-down.
