Came back after a two year hiatus, started over by deleting my original character and recycling her name to make a new one. Played a few hours and decided I had chosen poorly with my class, so I deleted again. Now I cannot exit the character creator. No matter what name I enter, the old one I have been reusing, a random string of text, nothing will un-grey the begin button. Is there a cooldown on character deletion I am unaware of? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Nicknames of deleted characters become available for re-use immediately, so unless someone swooped in, you should be able to create a character of the same name.
Keep in mind that, while only the nickname has to be unique, your character’s (fictional) first and last name are also subject to naming rules and an automated filter. If you hover over the 
button it’ll give you details about each part of your character’s name.
If the play button remains greyed out, one or more parts of your character’s name probably violates the automated rules. If your chosen nickname was in use, it would tell you via a dialogue box after you click on the PLAY button.
Finally, SWL does not have “classes” in the traditional sense. The “class” you pick during character creation is only a combination of two starter weapons You’ll be able to unluck all nine weapons and combine them however you like as you progress through the game.

Update. Retried with a series of number / letter strings from a random generator website. None of them were accepted and despite the tooltip claiming that the name can be 14 characters it stops accepting text inputs after eight characters. While I understand that a lot of names and name variants are taken, I struggle accepting that Qrdmph04, Ox259cya, Nurn2501, Br256Mxr and Knq25qnk are all taken. Any further advice?

Are you also filling out the first and last names? Characters must have a First Name, Last Name, AND Nickname.
It appears to have been a software issue. I used the reload RDB files command from the options tab of the launcher and it cleared up. Thank you all for your help.
