Unrelated questions and not sure where to go

I’m a solo player at level 25, built a small camp north of the starting river, near some iron deposits that I found. I have a few crafting stations down and made a full set of medium armor, iron tools and iron weapons. I find myself wondering what my next short-term goal is. I know I can build Stonebrick, but I feel like I want to save that for my next, bigger camp. In the meantime, I have a few questions:

  1. Combat is still sort of confusing. Sometimes holding down the L2 button doesn’t raise my shield to block. This usually happens mid-combat. Dodging also isn’t reliable, sometimes I can dodge, and sometimes I press the O button and I have to press it again. Do blocks and dodges need to be timed?

  2. Do truncheons not work when equipped on a thrall? I was roaming around with a thrall and I gave it a truncheon because I found a named enemy I’d like to… recruit, but my thrall ended up killing the enemy. I couldn’t take on the enemy by myself, I just get flattened.

  3. I feel tethered to my camp. I would like to explore places, but I feel like I can’t wander too far from my camp because, well, all my things are there. I find myself always having to run back to my camp once it gets dark, or I would run out of food. I know I can feed myself out there without having to go back to camp, but I guess the psychology of “I have a home” means that eventually my brain feels tethered to it and it’s impeding my exploration. I guess this is why many people never left their childhood home their entire lives!

  1. Keep trying different weapons and combos, you’ll eventually figure out how it all works.
  2. Equip your thrall with a truncheon and take away their weapon so they use the truncheon instead.
  3. Build a bed at your base and carry a bedroll with you while exploring. You can lay down your bedroll before a dangerous encounter and respawn closer to your body if killed. Also carry torches, food, water and basic tools for harvesting to replenish on the move.
  1. Are you by chance running out of stamina?

  2. They should work. They worked in the past and I’m not aware of any changes in that respect. Personally I prefer to just do it myself though, so I usually don’t put truncheons on thralls.

  3. Consider building an outpost as you venture further out if you need to. Just a small place where you can cook food or do some crafting or whatever. Doesn’t have to be anything fancy or particularly permanent. Also once you get a horse, this becomes much less of an issue.

Most of the comments cover what you need, but I’ll just add some tips too in relation to your 3 things

  1. yes they need to be timed. Don’t rely on dodge also just move around. can’t raise shield whilst being hit, back away a little then raise shield and move back in.

  2. exactly as Steeeeve said

  3. What they said lol. Also think of getting a Bearer Thrall, they are handy to carry your needed things as you level up your encumbrance and a good one can develop into strong follower

Have fun exploring further and further each time you go
