The new DUNE movie is awesome and I was excited watching the trailer for
Funcom’s new game based on this franchise. Until I thought about what a Funcom 1.0 release might actually look like. Am I wrong to be this cynical?

No… it’ll likely be a mess. That being said, I think about a game called APB Reloaded that was ported to PlayStation in 2017. It was so much lag and bad framerate that every review was a total disaster… then they broke it more not even a year later after finally getting it to run “decent.” It’s now being shut down on consoles and allowing merges to PC after they made several attempts to upgrade the engine and make it an actual working game… but failed miserably.

I can’t imagine even Funcom will screw it up THAT bad.

For those in the know on that game @Marylambs … yeah… rip.

You’re not wrong to be cynical, but it won’t be as simple as that, either.

My expectations are that they’ll go into early access and stay in it for months. At the end of it, the product will probably be relatively polished and will appeal to a wide enough group of players from which they would expect the cash shop whales to emerge after a while. Knowing Funcom, there will be certain not-quite-finished mechanics and other such things that they will “promise” to finish and polish up in the future.

I expect that the biggest turn-off won’t be quality problems, not right at the beginning where everything is still fresh enough and the code hasn’t rotted enough, but rather the fact that the game will most likely be heavily oriented towards monetization. Marketable features and content will have top priority from release 1.0 onward. I expect lots of typical FOMO bullshіt, and maybe even some P2W on top.

So yeah, I don’t think it’s going to be bad, but it will be the kind of game that embodies all the practices that I’m hoping the game industry is slowly starting to move away from.

Nope, we are re-entering the era of licensed properties for games are feces.
Couple that with Funcom’s recent track record and…

But here’s a silver lining.
If it sucks, that’s a few extra dollars you didn’t waste.

Then you lack imagination.

lol maybe… but APB was pretty bad. A love-hate relationship with that one. I loved the customization, but it broke all the time. The graphics were worse than when Conan pops in and out.
