What pen and paper RPG would you use to recreate AO at the table?

Topic. I’ve been thinking about this for years as a way to preserve AO in perpetuity. Numenera seems like the easiest one to hack, however it doesn’t fit the crunch present in AO and hasn’t ever really felt right to me. Recently I’ve been looking at Stars without Number, which is a mix of old basic / expert D&D and Traveller. Shadowrun has a ton of crunch and kind of fits as well. What would you use? Would you even want to play AO at the table?

In the 00s I played Shadowrun and for me it was the best experience that came close to AO.

Shadowrun definitely. Its lore & just amount of “stuff” is even more anarchistic than AO. It fits the best with not just one MEGA-CORP but dozens, implants, weapons, magic (3rd law), races.

The rest in no paticular order

Traveller – probably easier to adapt.

Cyberpunk 2020 (the basis for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077)

Fringeworthy looks interesting

Dont know if the system is around anymore, but I think I would use Torg. It was a pretty popular system back in 80’s or 90’s. (Dont remember when it was, but I think it was late 80’s, early 90’s).

If you want to bring AO to PnP then i would recommend the D20 system. Have a look here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?filters=510_0_1130_0_0 or here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D20_Future
