My Lian has both Telith’s Sorrow and an Epic 1h Mace in his inventory. How does he choose which melee weapon to use, or more importantly, how can I order him to use one or the other? Do I have to stop in the middle of, or before, a fight and put it in his hands?

They’re trying to select the “best” one, this is most likely done based on weapon damage.
Putting it in his hands would have no effect as after a swing or two it would just pick the one it preferes… so the way you influence what weapon they use is by simply taking away the other one.

Hmm, so if I leave both the Epic 1H Mace and Telith’s Sorrow (Epic named Sword), he will choose one or the other depending on the game’s interpretation of which is more suited to the situation, or which does more damage, what criteria is used to determine?

No… it will always choose the same one… the one that is deemed to be “better”
Which is why there’s no reason to give them 2 melee weapons

I notice thralls seem to use spears/pikes at longer range and switch to other weapons in closer combat when facing more than one enemy. Never expected them to do that, especially because I’m going for the strenght stat in their leveling and the closer combat weapon was agility and significantly weaker in one case. Found it by chance today. Still haven’t tested their efficacy while doing this. I just was encumbered and gave them weapons I had, convinced they would alwas use the spear in one case, ignoring a weaker legendary sword and a sword in the second, ignoring the weaker spear. Consistently they acted like this. Funny.
Any idea how the decision making happens in this case, @Xevyr ? They actually don’t suck while using pikes. I thought they would constantly miss, but they are quite accurate now.
My wife has Lissa o’ the Bow as one of her followers and equips her with both daggers and a bow and Lissa will always use the bow at range but then switches to the daggers once the mobs move into melee range, so there’s obviously some choosing going on. I just wondered what they would do if they had two melee weapons that were roughly comparable but where one has more obvious application (e.g., the 1H Sword provides AOE coverage when being swarmed, whereas Telith’s provides more solid single target DPS).
