I main Whirlwind Blades and have ever since they were daggers.
Never go for the spin-to-win, it is a complete waste of damage. Never do light attacks except to dispatch unconscious enemies.
Sprint attack can add bleed, but even if you take the full bleed damage into consideration, it does less damage than the normal heavy opener. Sprint attack should only be used when closing distance is important, or if you can actually apply more bleeds (like while circling the Red Mother).
The first and second heavy attacks have the highest combo damage modifier, then third is lower, and every attack after is even lower yet. You just want to do 1, 2, occasionally 3, then disengage long enough to reset combo, repeat.
Whirlwind Blades are not a brute force weapon, they are a dodge and weave weapon.
