I gave up trying to drop him a long time ago. Every time I went up against him I got a free trip back to base and lost another 20th level thrall. For me “rare” is a mini boss. Hell I’d rather take on the red dragon on the north side of the unnamed city.
Not sure if I was doing it wrong but feel this challenge needs a much higher rating. I know I have seen others that didn’t seem to be rated right as well.
So, two questions.
1: What am I doing wrong fighting the tortured king? I usually do a double team, role out and heal, fire a couple healing arrows, and back in with a 20th level T4 fighter.
2: Are there challenges you’ve seen that you feel are rated wrong?
Ya, I expect this to go the way of every other nice, nonargumentative thread to go. Just fade in to the shadows to be locked by time.
That boss can be hard. There are a few tricks you might try:
Take a shield, position yourself behind your thrall, and just block all the time. That should interrupt the king’s spear chain attacks.
Use two thralls. One is likely to get staggered to death.
Don’t use time on healing arrows. They heal very, very little - got changed some months ago.
Use spectral coating (from the Cimmerian area) to poison your and your thrall’s weapons.
Give your thrall(s) a mace. That weapon seems to make them more resistant to staggering, as it gives them “hyper armor” most of the time, i. e. locks them in animations they cannot be staggered out of.
Give your thralls (and yourself) the best armor and weapons. Perfected Heavy Armor (recipe from the Journey system) seems to be a good, cheap option for thralls now. Obsidian maces rock hard (as they are, literally, rock hard).
When you kill him, don’t forget to harvest the corpse with a pick or pick-axe. The boss drops really good bandages.

Maybe your server has some increased damage settings? Normally a T4 thrall of the better factions should be able to roll over it without issues even alone.
Did you not see the video I made when I was challenged to defeat him with a spear? (silly pvp discussion) I wasn’t on the most optimal build for it or wearing the best gear so it was dragged out a bit more even with a spear (but yes, that thing has low damage)
With a war-axe you should be able to make easy work of him even without thralls, but like I said, a good thrall with a 1h mace should be able to take him.

Edit: Just wanted to add, that with all that being said, I’d still make it a Legendary challenge… because it’s still a 3 skull world-boss with a decent sized health pool and even a fairly dangerous weapon. I’d make all 3 skull bosses a legendary.

Regarding the challenge: One should consider that the Tortured King is not whithin a separate dungeon, but in the open world. So, it doesn’t require to run through the whole Whine Cellar, for example.
Howerver, his position in the open world is quite remote for most players, so it takes a lot of time to even get there.
I’m trying to wrap my head around the idea of a level 20 Dalinsia losing this fight. Deacon admits that its his lack of tactics, but I think there is something else wrong happening here and not actually his fault. Even if he sat and did nothing, the thrall should still win this fight on its own.
Outside of the thrall having some really underwhelming gear, I can’t see them losing this under normal conditions. Like I wanted to assume server lag causing the thrall to stand and do nothing, but in my experience that would affect the boss equally but maybe not.
Let’s just rule some things out, what gear was the thrall using?
I love [Skeleton With Sword Boss #9875623], very well rounded and unique.
The easiest way to deal with them is with a mace or warhammer, stack up sunder and throw as much raw damage on them. Spectre coatings will also help out a ton if you have them
Yes, that’s why I was surprised as well. Without any authority or anything special a Dalinsia / Volcano dude / Berserker / rhts should just win that fight.
I’ll have to admit I haven’t tried this since 3.0 hit. Last time I tried I was at level cap and had one of the wandering T4 thralls. The private server I’m on now is a mix of difficult; slow stamina revive, and forgiving; don’t drop loot on death. I just saw it pop up as a challenge and had flash backs
That makes a ton of sense now, thanks. But dang we thought you were losing Dalinisa’s and stuff to this guy lol. One of the wandering T4’s could be a little sketch depending on which one it was.
Fighting him was ok… when I didn’t get logged off
My thralls aggro first, then I stay in the butt to deal damage with one hand sword or heal with arrows.
But my thralls have the bonus of healing themselves when I deal damage (attributes). It might help you too?
Though lately that area always makes me crash for some reason. Now I do not even dare to get close to it, in fear of being logged off, and log back in in a complete random place of the map without my stuff.
My clan mate goes there alone quite often though, for the bandages.
